do you have a super-sweet DVD player? -top of the line or just your average kind? mine's just average.

For some reason the DVD studio encoded the DVD as a PAL signal, which is how all European DVD's are encoded. All DVD's that are sold and marketed in North America are NTSC encoded.

I've never once encountered a Region 1 marketed DVD release that was PAL encoded before, but this one definitely was.

If you don't have a DVD player that can convert a PAL signal to an NTSC sigmal, you won't be able to play the DVD. A good majority (not all) of DVD players sold in North America cannot convert a PAL signal.

However, you can view the DVD on any computer's DVD-ROM drive, since PAL and NTSC don't affect the playback on a computer monitor.

This is a strange DVD release. I've watched thousands of DVD's over the years and checked their technical details, and this ranks as one of the strangest encoding flubs.

Just today, encountered the same issue with a rental copy from my local video store. My DVD player has never before failed to play any of hundreds of DVDs I own, nor any of those I've rented. This played fine on my DVD-ROM drive, so I think you're right - must be something in the encoding.
