Question about ending SPOILERS

They said 2 boys died. which ones? I'm really hoping that the one who lived was the good brother. I think they said the dad survived, cause it was mentioned he might try to sue. I kinda wish the dick dad had died too though. but maybe it was better to have him live with what he caused by not just making his son apologize. I was proud of the good brother though when he finally yelled at his dad and told him to stop. I wish he hadn't been shot though. he didn't deserve that.

The outcome wasn't clear to me at first viewing either. However, on second viewing:

Unfortunately, the only boy with any conscience or sense of decency (Harold) was definitely one of the two dead. It's also implied that the other dead boy was the trailer trash tagalong Pete.

So the main perpetrators, Danny and his father, survived and continued to plague Ludlow's life with a wrongful death civil suit, even though by all rights they should have been in prison for attempted murder (Ludlow's worst offense was trespassing followed by shooting back in self-defense).

In a way, it's a very nihilistic film because justice isn't served, decent people don't triumph, and the worst human vermin go on plaguing others. Much as is the case in the real world.

Ludlow never trespassed.

Trespassing occurs when a person has already been told to leave private property AND then given the opportunity to leave — and not at gunpoint.

Many of the legal claims made in this movie are at the usual level of screenwriter legal knowledge (i.e., not much). A quick call to a lawyer or even checking online would help a lot with this but they can’t be bothered with, you know. Research. Easier to just put an open legal book in the lawyer’s hands while he pontificates, though I’d bet that never happens IRL.

Ending wrecked the movie for me. Demonstrated that the main character has learned nothing. Plods ahead and can take abuse like a good soldier (or a good dog), but can't really think. The film doesn't even indicate that the creeps went to jail for attempted murder so all we are left with is frustration at the old guy's stupidity.

Avery also naively believes that people will do the right and moral thing even after experiencing his own family tragedy (having his wife murdered by drug addicted, mentally ill son). If that wasn't enough to make him bitter and cynical about human nature, it's no surprise that he thinks no worse of the rotten McCormack clan.

I think the two who died were Harold and Pete. We still see Danny screaming after being shot and Pete was unresponsive.
