No investigation case closed?

I think Danny and his Dad were horrible people who deserved to be severely tortured but killed not so much? Avery knew going up to their house on their property would lead up to a deadly confrontation yet he did it anways. There wasn't even an investigation. Self defense so what it still counts as homicide. I felt really bad for Avery through out the movie but three people parished (one who actually showed remorse) because of him and he gets to live happily ever after. I don't get it... Am I missing something?

I understand your point of view. It was not necessary to kill the boys, especially Harold who was better than his brother and who was remorseful. BTW at the end they talk about lawsuits so there's some investigation in the case but it still was self-defense... It was wrong from Avery to confront the family because it was pretty sure that someone would die, but the father was crazy in the first place when he drove into Ave's car since Ave was holding Danny at gunpoint. I think that, in the end, everybody went crazy, more or less. The tension escalated and there was this terrible ending, matching the deaths of Avery's own sons...

You can't blame Avery for the confrontation that happened. He was just there to show them Red's body. Danny tried to kill him. And I wouldn't say he gets to live happily ever after. He feels responsible for the deaths of two of the boys and has to live with that.
