Why did they make Spencer handicap?

Seasons 1-3 he was just an easygoing, creative, goofy character, but still was a functional human being. Starting in Season 4 and especially in season 5 they made him basically mentally handicapped and it was weird. Especially the episode where they try to find him adult friends. He was such a great character and they ruined him.
