Why the applause ?

Every time -EVERY TIME- gibby shows up in the later seasons and says "GIBBAAAYYYY" why does the show applause (the sound that laughs and says aaaw etc.) ? I dont get it

reply

I think it was meant as a joke. Either that or they were trying to subliminally endear people to Gibby before giving him his own show (which was attempted, but the network didn't pick it up).

They do that on every sitcom when a popular character comes in and utters his catchphrase. Good Times is a good example. Whenever JJ Evans says "DYNOMITE" the live audience goes crazy. I guess they're trying to replicate that tradition even with a canned audience.

It's like when Kramer would show up on Seinfeld.
