Why was Carly SO unlikeable?

Does Dan know how to write ANYONE likeable? Carly is a complete bitch to pretty much everyone. CLEARLY thinks she is better than everyone. And that is what Dan think would be the popular, loved by everyone girl?

I personally don't see Carly as a bitch. Most of the time she is likable. Carly is basically the straight person to her wackier family and friends. Her tossing of the party hat in the opening credits is a nod to the old Mary Tyler Moore Show where Mary was the straight person in her universe. Since the beginning of iCarly, Carly has worn more than one hat on the show. She is not just Spencer's baby sister. Because they no longer have their mother, at times Carly also has to be Spencer's mom--forcing him to become more adult. Carly and Sam are best friends, but Carly is the opposite of Sam and the more mature of the two--scolding Sam when she acts selfishly. Because Sam has had past difficulties, Carly is like a mother/older sister to Sam. She is trying to keep Sam on the straight and narrow while still letting Sam be herself. Carly and Freddie are pretty similar in how they view their world. Freddie is more like the second straight person on the show and often supports Carly in her viewpoint on a situation.

Carly is not a saint. She freaks out over small details and gets a bit boy-crazy. Considering her friendship with Freddie for some reason she doesn't seem to take the time to get to know the other boys she has liked but later dropped. But most of the time Carly is the person everyone looks to for some advice and common sense. Whether they follow it is another matter. :)

I think the reason Carly is not always a fan favorite character is because she is sometimes viewed as almost too perfect, too goody two-shoes. In the basic setup of traditional comedy, someone has to be the straight person. Sometimes that role goes to a supporting player, but it is not unusual that it can be the lead character that the show revolves around.
