What does 'cash game' mean?

Thanks.

The show's usual format, after buying in with $20,000, is a winner-take- all 120k prize. Five of Six players win nothing.
Cash game means you come with your own stake and win what you win at the end of the night(or in the show's case, day 5). It might be 200k or $10? You don't go all out because there is no "prize."

and as long as you have money you are not out of the game like the normal freeze-out format... u can rebuy as many times as you want

Yes, with cash games you can bring however much you want. Say, in a high stakes game you start out with $100,000. You play a few hrs and now your stack is at $300,000. Well, if you want you can cash out and collect the money and have just made a $200,000 profit. Same goes if you end up losing $50,000 and so you cash out with 1/2 your money lost.

Tournaments are where you buy in for a set amount, and are given a set amount of chips which have no real value except for tournament use, and are awarded a certain monetary figure if you are in the money. But you cant cash those chips, so if you are in a tournament and have $15 million in chips that is just a representation, but not an actual dollar amount that you have.

So in a Poker After Dark cash game, can a player who is ahead, just get up and walk away at will?

LOL I seen Negreanu lose over $500,000 in one hand on Poker After Dark. He looked sick as hell, but his attitude about it was still 1000 times better than Hellmuths after losing one hand to an amature.

BTW, I always wanted to ask something, but was afraid people would think it was a stupid question. In cash games, why do some people use both chips and stacks of cash? Is it just some of the people choose not to exchange their cash into chips?

Hey Lovax. I asked that very same question on these boards. Evidently, it's just more visually interesting to have both chips and cash.

In terms of people walking away from the table after a huge hand, I'm sure it would be kosher on PAD, because their format is so relaxed! Did you ever notice that? The contestants eat, drink, wear cruddy sneakers...

I'd kind of like to watch a taping.

Yeah I guess that could be why. I mean who doesn’t like looking at stacks of cash. I personally love the sound of the chips, which you can’t make with the cash. I also thought it was kinda funny how the bills are never the crisp clean new bills. It’s like they just got the cash out of their sock drawer.

I guess I was wondering cuz some of the guys had a mixture of cash and chips. I was thinking maybe some of the guys at the table started off with all chips, while some started off with all cash, and as the game progressed, the chips and cash got mixed around.

They have probably used the same bundles since the show started.
