What's the best twist you've ever seen?

And just give us the name of two movies. No need to spoil anything for somebody else.

Mine are "The Sixth Sense"
and "The Life of David Gale"

I don't figure this one is going to crack the top two, but if the twist pleased you, then by all means mention it!
I just think using verbiage in the trailers like "the twist you'll never see coming" is pretty detrimental to the theater life of a movie.

reply

Se7en, Saw, and The Prestige.

"I know I'm awake...but it feels like I'm in a dream."

reply

The Uninvited and Lucky Number Slevin

reply

The twist in The Uninvited literally left me with my mouth open like OMG i can't believe I didn't see that coming. It was definetly the best twist I've ever seen in a movie.

reply

the only thing that really shocked me about that movie was how much hotter arielle kebbler got between doing The Grudge 2 and this movie. It's NUTS. I dunno if she got a tapeworm and a stylist or what but she went from a 5 to a 10.

"the only thing that really shocked me about that movie was how much hotter arielle kebbler got between doing The Grudge 2 and this movie. It's NUTS. I dunno if she got a tapeworm and a stylist or what but she went from a 5 to a 10. "

Uh she wasn't in this movie, and nobody in this movie looked like her.

reply

I know sometimes it's impractical to read all the posts in a thread before replying, but cmon man, at least read the ONE RIGHT BEFORE MINE before calling me out.

reply

Uh...this was the one before yours.

"The twist in The Uninvited literally left me with my mouth open like OMG i can't believe I didn't see that coming. It was definetly the best twist I've ever seen in a movie."

And nothing previous had to do with that either. So idk what you're talking about, still.

reply

Right, and Arielle Kebbel was in The Uninvited.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0815245/

Are you seriously still confused?

reply

"the only thing that really shocked me about that movie was how much hotter arielle kebbler got between doing The Grudge 2 and this movie."

The key being "this movie". It doesn't make sense to be referring to the movie mentioned in the post above you, when the thread and board are about The Perfect Getaway. So I'm not confused, but you worded things weird.

reply

Actually, it does make sense, because I clicked "reply" on his post to reply to his post specifically. I'm not sure if it's your view settings or whatever, but I don't see how you could have been confused unless you didn't read the posts sequentially.

I'll try to be more concise and speak from within the broader context for your benefit in the future though, ok?

reply

Thank you I appreciate it.

reply

Lol your an idiot he said "That movie" not this movie

I'm sorry not everyone can be right.

reply

no, he said "this movie"

reply

I have no idea why people would choose to view threads in anything but nested mode, but I urge everyone to switch to that right now. It makes conversations much easier to follow, and doing so would make it unambiguously clear what hexrei meant.

reply

hexrey's post:

"the only thing that really shocked me about that movie was how much hotter arielle kebbler got between doing The Grudge 2 and this movie. It's NUTS. I dunno if she got a tapeworm and a stylist or what but she went from a 5 to a 10."

So, yes, I know you're just a troll ;)

reply

Yes and that makes sense but he then goes on to say "...between doing The Grudge 2 and this movie."

So if "that movie" is The Uninvited then "this movie" has to be A Perfect Getaway.

And The Uninvited was an appalling film, one of the worst I've ever seen. Watch A Tale of Two Sisters which it (The Uninvited) is a remake of.

What happened to your eyes?

reply

I guess you won the argument

reply

haha...people amaze me sometimes with their stupidity/ignorance...i don't see how your post could confuse anyone

well, you don't spell it son, you eat it

reply

I understood what he was talking about and i just glanced over everyones posts..Really not that hard

reply

No offence but it doesn't take a genius to figure out he was talking about the uninvited, considering arielle kebbel was a main character in that movie.

reply

Ending of The Others was a good twist.

reply

The Uninvited shouldn't have surprised anybody if you stop watching garbage remakes and check out the original (and FAR superior) movie it was based on....

I guess while a lot of people wouldn't find them effective anymore, the twists for The Sixth Sense and The Usual Suspects would have absolutely amazed me had I seen them in the theatres when they first came out.

reply

The Orphan, Saw

reply

I faintly recall Lucky Number Slevin but don't remember any details about the film, probably twist not impressive enough for me

reply

Of all the others listed in this thread, this is the one I agree with most. All three were fantastic, but Usual Suspects needs to be included I think.

reply

I tried reading all the replies here to refresh my memory but there is so much. So there are the ones I can remember I included movies that were based from a book (not in order):

1. A Tale of Two Sisters (Original Asian movie where Uninvited was based)
2. Sixth Sense
3. The Usual Suspects
4. Lucky Number Slevin
5. Primal Fear (Richard Gear, Edward Norton)
6. Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None" (Made into movie still good but it is way better in the book)
7. Daphne du Maurier's "Rebecca" (Also based from a book)
8. Agatha Christie's "Death in the Nile" (Made into a movie)
9. Agatha Christie's "Evil under the Sun" (Made into a movie)
10. The Prestige
11. The Others
12. Identity

reply

Kudos on "the prestige"! What a horribly underrated film...it's funny how Inception really got so much when I think the Prestige is so much more...nothing against Inception though.

reply

Nothing against Inception? I thought it was garbage.

I enjoyed the twist in The Village.

Haters feel free to flame away. This movie was underwhelming, IMO.

"Into every life a little coffee must spill."

reply

The Village was a nice twist. To be clear I did not enjoy Perfect Getaway for any twist-I just enjoyed seeing everything come to fruition and I liked the characters so much I got very involved in seeing them make it through the conflict in the end and fighting for each other.

reply

Haunted - Great book, OK film.

"Flatly My Dear, I Don't Riverdance"

reply

Does Memento count

reply

momento is more like a twist beginning lol

reply

Primal Fear and Saw

reply

The Sixth Sense, Scream, and Memento.

reply

The Sixth Sense
The Other (not The Others)

reply

since someone already said the usual suspects i will also say Frailty and silence of the lambs

reply

Orphan, is by far my favorite.

reply

I would have to say the first Scary Movie...
i NEVER saw it coming...

reply

LoL yeah the first Scary Movie had a pretty awesome twist that I definitely didn't see coming!!! LMAO

reply

-> lord_of_the_wings
Do you mean "The Other" 1972?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069050/

reply

@AgnoscoCausa

That's correct.

reply

Sixth Sense (jaw-dropping the first time)
The Usual Suspects (that twist put a big grin on my face)

I did like the twist in this one. I figured it out before it was revealed, but there were still enough other clues to make me think "well, I could be wrong..."

reply

Identity

reply

I'm not going to name The Sixth Sense because it's too obvious. The best, in my opinion and experience.

So I'll say Oldboy and Audition.

Why did the moron beat his head against the wall?...because it felt so good when he stopped.

reply

Among the best twists are (and remember, these are older films which were much more unexpected in their own times):

PINK JUNGLE

SLEEPAWAY CAMP

PREY (the "killer doll" episode in TALES OF TERROR)

THE BLIND BEAST

THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN (prior to this, most sci-fi and horror movies had been "resolved" in a nice way by the ending)

THE VISITORS (an episode of the original "Twilight Zone")

GET CARTER (the original)

$ (a lousy movie, but a pretty big twist in the end)

THE LAST MAN ON EARTH/OMEGA MAN

THE MECHANIC

CZECH-MATE

THE CANDY SNATCHERS

THE DEPARTED (as well as its original Hong Kong incarnation INFERNAL AFFAIRS)

Steve V.

reply

Carnival of Souls

reply

The original Wicker Man, unbreakable, Signs, fight club,

What is The Visitors about?

Carpe Diem!!!

reply

As stated, "The Visitors" was an episode of the original "Twilight Zone" series, half-hour, black and white, probably around 1960 or '61. Agnes Moorehead (later of "Bewitched") starred as an aging, mute country woman alone in her wilderness cabin one night when a "meteor" crashed into the attic of her home. Soon enough, the meteor was revealed be a small, saucer-shaped spacecraft which was carrying a number of space-suited alien visitors apparently no more than eight or nine inches tall.

Naturally, warfare broke out immediately. The tiny aliens scurried all about the primitive house and fired weapons that stung and hurt Agnes but failed to actually injure her. Without a gun of her own, Agnes used her wits and anything at hand to fight back. Slowly and painfully, the woman managed to eliminate the aliens, one by one, until she chased the sole survivor back to the attic and discovered the damaged miniature spacecraft . . . .

SPOILER!!

SPOILER!!

SPOILER!!

READ NO FURTHER IF YOU DON'T WANT TO DISCOVER THE TWIST ENDING!!!!

Taking a hatchet, Agnes began to chop and crush the little ship to pieces, and it was then that the camera played across the lettering on one side of it. The words were in English, and they read, "US AIRFORCE." At the very end, the voice of the last "alien" becomes audible as he radios back to his home far away, "This is the U.S. WhateverItWas, crashed landed on a world of homicidal giants! Entire crew massacred! Stay away! Stay away from this planet!"

You see, since Agnes never spoke, the viewer failed to realizedbefore the end that she was, in fact, the alien, and her little tormentors were American astronauts who had had the misfortune to break down on her planet. It was quite a powerful piece for a kid as young as I was back then, I'll tell you. Steve V.

reply

I think that TZ episode is called "The Invaders".

reply

Some oldies but goldies in that list. Well done mvance! I'd like to add Witness for the prosecution to that

reply

Thanks for the kind words. WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION was a fine selection, too. Steve V.

reply

The Sixth sense is a given. It was sooooo good. It makes you watch it again.

Oldboy is my favorite. The end is really a shocker.

A Tale of Two Sisters was really good too.

I Loved The Silecne of the Lmabs and Saw too

Perfect Stranger

reply

I can't believe nobody mentioned Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.

reply

[deleted]

*beep* YES, SONDEMO
*beep* YES.

Perfect Stranger, because it was the first legit twist I ever saw. All the good ones (Fight Club, Sixth Sense, Star Wars) were already spoiled for me.

reply

I've seen pretty much every film mentioned in this thread and I can honestly say none of those twists compare to "Dot the I". Each time a huge twist is revealed you think you have the whole thing figured out and then they drop another big twist on you that completely changes everything.

BTW I never understood why everyone is so into "The Sixth Sense". I never really liked it. I won't say I saw the twist coming, but I remember wondering if it was my imagination or not that Bruce Willis wasn't interacting with any of the other characters. I didn't dwell on it because I wasn't trained to look for possible twists before they are revealed. I think the only thing that movie had going for it was the time of it's release. Nobody would really care for it if it was released today.

reply

Not sure, but I think The Usual Suspects was released before Sixth Sense. The Usual Suspects sort of started the twist ending trend. It has one of the best ever.

Sometimes, tho, I feel sorry for M. Night Shyamalan. His career now seems trapped, i.e., he HAS to come up with a twist ending for every movie or he gets seriously dissed, tho he seems to get dissed now even with the twist endings, probably cuz he will never equal or top Sixth Sense. Not that anyone else is likely to do so either.

reply

hope I'm remembering the title correctly. It's John Cusack movie that is set at a motel.

reply

1408 is the one your talking about

i also liked The Orphanage

reply

hope I'm remembering the title correctly. It's John Cusack movie that is set at a motel.

It's actually Idenity. I was going to say this one too. Great movie.

reply

are you kidding me!! the twist ending has been around way before the usual suspects. its used all the time in movies since the creation of creativity, the only difference is that most twists are done crappy.

reply

You may be right about the release dates but 'Sixth Sense' is the more accredited film for the twist impact.

I feel sorry for the guy too. He ain't ever going to beat that film. But more sadly, it's become an unwanted trademark based on one film.

reply

G-force (never thought the mole was the mole!)
Righteous Kill (genius at the end, though a lousy movie)

reply

Unbreakable has one of the best endings ever.

Saw also has one of the best endings ever.

Seven Pounds had a really good twist, but some people can figure it out easily.
