How did he propose to GET the million?

I enjoyed watching this film.
The mood, the pace, the general storyline were all engaging.

BUT, the thing that bugged me the most was the whole 'had plastic surgery to get a million dollars' idea.

That made NO SENSE WHATSOEVER!

Sam Ruben is a private detective. Stern wants David Hudson dead because Hudson is blackmailing him. He will pay a million dollars for Hudson dead. Ruben cannot find David Hudson, so he has plastic surgery to look like Hudson.
What was his plan after that?
There isn't a plausible scenario that could play out AND let him walk away with Stern's money.

How did Ruben expect to collect the money? Surely Stern would only pay the money when he knew Hudson was dead. Unless he was a complete and utter FOOL.
Did Ruben do it because he wanted to give the money to someone else (that we weren't told about in the film)?

No-one on this board has been able to answer that question logically yet.

I would very much like someone to clear it up for me.
