Great example of when to edit
The scene when Schneider and Buscemi were shifting the sofa into the house. Such an unnecessary scene, I have no idea why it was included.

shareThat scene showed how they started to bond. It was recognizable also. Great movie :)
Ur a troll? Hope you starve to death
Because it was the sofa their mother was sitting on when they found her in the storage room, and they were told that she used to go there very often, and sit in that sofa until the storage was closed, so, they thought that she would like to have that sofa in her house even though she said there was no room for it in her apartment, so it was necessary to have that scene there, to show the viewers how much her sons cared about her... DUH!!! XD
shareIt was also their dad's favorite chair. That's why she kept going there and was probably sitting in it.
The scene showed the brothers' re-bonding. It was a metaphor of them growing up together. In that struggle, a few things broke like the vase (maybe their hearts), but they didn't pay that much attention and kept going.
I love this scene. Not an editing error at all.

Post #2 and #3 are correct: it shows the family was healing from the death of their father. It was quietly important.
