How can Jewish Greg marry gentile Pam without being excommunicated?

I mean, Greg is clearly a practicing Jew (he never says he isn't).

And Jack and his family are anything but Jewish, and being so conservative, must be religious (baptist, presbytarian, something like that).

So unless Greg is a Messianic Jew, how can he marry a non Jew without being excommunicated? Only way is if either one converts, and the movie just never goes there.

Never mind how the kids will be brought up (as Jews or as Christians), something Jack would definitely want to know, after seeing his reaction to the mere suggestion he may have some Jewish ancestry...

There is no excommunication in Judaism. If you are born Jewish, you're Jewish.

There is shunning, which for all practical purposes is the same. The only difference is semantic. He would find himself as welcome as Jesus (who IS still a Jew, yet try getting any sympathies for him from an orthodox Jew using that line).

reply

I think you are antisemantic.

People of different religions get married everyday. I have been to a few weddings of a Jewish person and a Catholic/Christian person. The only thing that can't happen, is they can not get married in a Roman Catholic Church. I have been to ceremonies where they have had a judge marry them, a licensed friend, and even the couple having a rabbi and a priest marry them. I have been to other duel religious marriages, but the OP just seems interested in Jewish and Christian ones. Love is love, get over it.

Isn't the last scene in front of the Christmas tree? Seems OK to have that influence in the home.

Correct! I was born to an Italian, Father and a Jewish, Mother. Still makes me a Jew. Just like Jesus Christ. Growing up we celebrated Christmas. Regardless of the fact I am a practicing Catholic. Will never change the fact I am Jewish. Why does someone always have to bring Religion or race into something? Can't we just enjoy the ride!!!!
