Ending is weird?

Carmen had been killed by Jacob 12 years ago and he had been serving time ever since. In jail, through his interactions with other folks and putting them in different roles, he imagined a life that could have been if Carmen was still alive and he was not in jail. But the truth keeps on creeping in his thoughts no matter how hard he tries to imagine a good life. Every incident, every scene, every line in the movie has a meaning and is parallel to his real life in jail. For example, the reason he finds himself chained to a bed is because, in jail, he actually is chained. The teddy bear in his imagination was the same teddy bear that Carmen had when she was a little girl. The movie is full of these hints.

In the end, when he escapes from his imagination and finds himself in jail, he asks his lawyer to look for a picture in the secret spot. Now is that picture really there or not, is something that has been left for the audience to decide. Since his imagination was so strong that he can actually create a life so real that it feels real to him. He believes in it without a doubt. But in reality, it's just his imagination. The lawyer finds the picture. But is it really there or does she actually believe Jacob so strongly that she imagines it to be there? As they say belief can move mountains.

While I appreciate you putting a different angle on things, theres no way I am buying that. A lawyer is supposed to be strong minded anyway and theres no way that TWO people could have such vivid imaginations and warped minds. The ending ruined the whole thing for me and compromised everything that had happened. I did enjoy the film, but theres no excuse for such a ridiculous final scene, to call it 'open ended' really is a copout.

I agree 100%. Had the movie simply ended with his execution then perhaps it would have been worth the watch. Granted, the director led the audience through the entire movie without giving one hint until the last few minutes, which was very good, I've seen it done before in other good movies like Jacob's Ladder for instance.

However, the final scene where the lawyer finds the photograph that never took place is retarded. How could the director be stupid enough to lead the entire audience through fantasy to a conclusion based in reality, only to completely contradict the conclusion he just made. I suppose he had hoped to leave the audience stunned and impressed, but he was dead wrong. This movie left me extremely pissed. The director ruined what could have been a decent movie with that last scene that should have never happened...

IMO, this movie is garbage. If you are going to watch it, you are better off just turning it off right after Jacob asks for hot tea for his last meal. Obviously this movie had no screenings otherwise that "open-ending" would have been removed.
