interviewees comments on Irreversible

You gotta love the anti-American sentiment in these series of documentaries. My favorite was when they showed the very graphic and very brutal rape of Monica Bellucci in Irreversible and then mocked American films for not having the guts to be so honest and brutal and how that in the US, they would suggest the rape but cut away. One by one each person interviewed bascially said the same thing. "This could never happen in a US movie."

Well...I guess in their quest to bash Americans as prudish, they forgot that 14 years before Irreversible, that a US movie not only showed a rape scene as honest, disturbing and graphic and that one, but the most American film Academy gave it plenty of publicity by awarding Jodie Foster the Oscar for her portrayal of the rape victim. And that movie (The Accused) received just an R-rating. (Though I wonder what it would have initially gotten if the NC-17 rating existed in 1988.)

That scene from The Accused was AT LEAST as bad as the one from Irreversible, and done 14 years earlier.

I guess American studios aren't so prudish and afraid after all.
