Dubbed or Subbed? Here's why...

I usually totally ignore the ridiculously lame US dubbing on Japanese films, be they live action, anime, whatever. But Vexille presents an interesting dilemma of sorts. See, the main characters are American and as such, it kind of doesn't make sense that they'd ALL be speaking Japanese through the whole movie, especially when they're in Los Angeles etc. Even when the action shifts to Japan, the supporting characters that revolve around the main character herself (Vexille is an American) could still believably speak English for her benefit. Therefore, in order to get the best overall thematic effect, it would seem that watching Vexille English dubbed is the way to go. Thankfully, the American voice actors do an above-par job with the dubbing so it's not a total waste. Although what would have been awesome was if the two casts worked together and used English AND Japanese where it made the most sense. Would have presented a realistic effect and really have worked well to serve the story (Japan's self-imposed isolation, Vexille being the stranger in a strange land, etc).

Despite this glowing exception (and really, the US dub is very nearly as good as the original Japanese dialogue) it's always a safe bet to rely solely on the native language of the film's creators. At least that's my preference. :)
