How Does It Compare With the Appleseed Films?

Better, Worse?

Worse in every aspect than Appleseed. The story is too unbeliveable and cliched and I wasn't very impressed by the visuals either. Especially humans look fake and lifeless. You could say the same stuff about Appleseed, but at least the action sequences were really good in that one which is something I cannot say about Vexille. The only thing I really liked were the sandworms.

5/10 from me (4 + 1 for the sandworms), Appleseed gets 6 (both versions), haven't seen Ex Machina yet but I don't have high expectations.

It's more memorable... I enjoyed it a lot more than Appleseed.

I think Vexille is a few steps back from Appleseed in terms of animation quality. I could understand an argument that characters were made to look stiff and artificial on purpose to support the theme, but if so it was a huge mistake.

In terms of plot, Vexille was just plain boring. It's a very simplistic, straightforward story without any twists. The actions scenes looked good, but again, there wasn't much to them.

I was eager to show Appleseed to all my friends. I don't plan to even mention Vexille or think any more about it after today.

For people that have no background into Anime, Vexille is easier to swallow as indeed the plot and story is a bit more shallow, as such its easier to follow if you're not the type who's used to convoluted plots twists that anime's often have.

Appleseed has more of a following seeing as it has its original anime and manga fans for support.

Don't deprive yourself though and go see both films as each has their strong points and are well worth the 90 minutes you escape the real world for.

IMO the people looked so much better in Vexille. Especially the eyes, the eyes were something that put Appleseed in the "uncanny valley" or whatever it's called. In Vexille you can look at the characters without feeling grossed out after a while. The CGI quality was better in Vexille in terms of sharpness, texture quality and it didn't use motion blur all the time to obscure it's flaws.

Storywise Vexille is a no-brainer, but with some interesting aspects. Just the fact that it's about Americans is pretty cool and it's the first time I've seen Japanese people looked specifically Japanese and not just "anime".

It's more action, less talking, and less anime actually. If you were turned off by the twisty plot of Appleseed but liked the action sequences, this is a more down to earth, more realistic(for lack of a better word), preferrable alternative.

Vexille by far

I don't understand all the love for Appleseed the story is over convoluted in Appleseed of which can be described as a typical action movie.
The Whole Dystopian society is done and over with there are so many Movies like that already Appleseed was ehh, and how many times can I say, Over convoluted story near the end i just can't describe how painfull it is at times.

Vexille i liked more the story was better executed it was more straightfoward, the action scenes were much more creative then Appleseed escpecially the Jag scenes. The action scenes were much better in my opinion, Vexille is definately catered more toward American audiences as the story is much more straightfoward and the key Dramatic points are well Could be better I found it much better then how Appleseed handled it.

Vexille in my opinion had more meaning story wise then Appleseed, how the charachters fight for there Humanity to me is much more original then something wrong in a Dystopian Society Clones blah blah blah blah done so many times it gets sooo boring.

In terms of action Vexille is a step towards Advent Children - action, chase scenes are executed in so much precision and awesome special effects, the "camera" work improved since Appleseed so it could get a more 'real' look. Although the all the fast paced segments are great it lacks the story, which I suppose was much better in Appleseed, it reminded me a little of a Ghost in the Machine. I mean it wasn't bad, but as someone mentioned it was lacking interesting twists and themes, the characters didn't involve me in the adventure. All in all fantastic movie, but it could be much better.

I found that Vexille had a more impact on me than Appleseed even though I think Applessed has more better action.

Better-- for the simple reason that it did not try to go for loud senseless action or grand-sounding philosophizing as often as Appleseed did. It also knew how to avoid the difficulty of conveying facial expressions by using silhouettes & other cinematic tricks.

The main action, after the prologue/introduction in the first half hour or so, takes place over about three days and additional exposition is done through introspective flashbacks. The pacing and execution of the film, if you like the genre/style, is consistent and "solid"-- though nothing is particularly mind-blowing.

So it had a "all in a day's work" (of a SWORD operative) feel for me-- which kept me more interested than the histrionics in Appleseed. And the ending... what I can say, but only the Japanese would dare write a story that rise to such heights of delusion and such depths of despair.

*****MAJOR ENDING SPOILERS*****

The SWORD operatives discovered that the Japanese "race" has in fact been irrrevocably "wiped out" by the time they get there.

Appleseed felt like one long montage of fight scene/music videos strung together by an almost incomprehensibly stupid and convoluted plot.

I like the plot in "Vexille" a lot more. I felt it's quite a bit more tragic than "Appleseed's/Appleseed Ex Machina's". I was satisfied with the animation; in fact I thought Vexille and Maria both looked quite realistic.

Unfortunately "Vexille" is somewhat slower-paced than Appleseed. More importantly, "Vexille" spent a loooong time developing the plot, but almost no time developing the characters - specifically Vexille herself, which is a real shame, as I really like her.
