What did Michael do to earn him the time in prison?

I'm having problem understanding what he did... He explained what happened to Miss Pettigrew but I don't understand it. Something about tower of london and jewel??

Could someone rephrase his explanation in a simpler term please?

He drunkenly decided to steal the crown jewels (kept in the Tower of London) and had an altercation with a guard. Presumedly he didn't get very far or the sentence would have been longer.
