It's not that bad...

I'll admit, I haven't seen any of Uwe's other work, so I don't really know if he really is a truly bad director ;).

Anyway, I thought this movie was alright. I don't know much about the 1968 invasion of Vietnam, so I don't know how historically accurate the events played out in this movie are (guessing highly exaggerated).

I think it's major downfall was the bad acting from a few of the characters, but what can you expect when the guy can't get any big name actors :p. The writing also wasn't great, but I haven't seen many action films where it is.

I think this at least deserves an IMDB 6.0. It was just as good as a lot of the other action flicks out there. The excessive gore was pretty cool too.

I am in the same boat as the OP in that this is the first Uwe Boll flick I've seen even though I am aware of his reputation as a filmmaker. I thought the film was OK, I would give it a 5 out of 10. I have seen many, many Vietnam War films, seen many documentaries, read books and even took a couple classes in college in Military History and specifically the Vietnam War.

The biggest hangup for me was the basecamp. Everything from the location, to lack of perimeter, to general setup was just ridiculous. I don't recall learning or seeing in films at any time a US firebase or camp set up in the jungle. Aside from the obvious gaffs like incorrect firearms for the era, incorrect uniforms, wrong jeeps, was Pare's character a Sgt or Lt because he is referenced as both, I thought there was decent action scenes and the tunnel scenes were very well done.

All in all, 5 out of 10. I've seen a lot worse, and I've seen a lot better.

Same here. I saw it last year as a random DVD hire. I'm really interested in Vietnam War films and haven't seen anything about the tunnels before.

The director seemed to be more interested in showing the things that happened in the tunnels, the different traps and ways to die rather than concentrating on developing a few characters which is why, I guess, he gets a bit of flak. So if you treat it as more of an acted-out documentary on ways to die in a tunnel, it's better, I guess. It wasn't too bad. From what I've read, people did die those ways in the tunnels - including the gory bamboo through the neck death. The tunnels are a very under-documented part of the war, it seems.

If your interested in the tunnel aspect of the war, you should check out the book "The Tunnels of Cu Chi" by Tom Mangold & John Penycate. The book gives you first hand accounts from both sides of what it was like in the tunnels. It's a good read!
