Heroine's Rose Belt?????

I am attempting to watch this for the 2nd time tonight on TMC's Splatterday Saturday. I was trying to understand the reason for the focus so much on the Rose on the Heroine's belt...(sorry, but I missed her name)

Everytime she seemed to grasp at that Rose, she would faint. Did it have a magic pellet that it administered maybe a tranquilizer? Just kidding, but it just seemed weird, and apart from that...(call me cuckoo) but I actually liked the movie. Woulda been better if it didn't have such a downer ending, but ahh I get the unrequited love aspect.
I just wished it would have delved more into things instead of just touching on weird stuff.
1) The belt was bugging me, what was the deal with it? Then....

2) After she ate that goo, she saw... near the water, what looked to be a dead body in a spider like wrapped cocoon. It was dripping yellow goo stuff into the same type of bowls that they were eating from. Was that the food of the forest that Spike mentioned earlier? Eccchhh! So...was it a human body that was wrapped up & did she consume human goo?

3) Also, what was the relationship between the Heroine & Spike, in their past? I gathered that maybe her Daddy adopted him...possibly out of pity...when Spike was young, but found him to be dangerous to his daughter....and later, either left him behind somewhere in the forest, or just split one day with his daughter, leaving him abandoned.
It would have been nice to have had more of a background on them from their past....so that the audience would be more receptive of him & his obsession with her. Far better than just showing us a quickie synopsis through his pictures & drawings of her (& him). I think it might have made for a better movie, in my eyes. So I am guessing they were adopted brother & sister?
Oh...& what exactly was he? It would have been nice to have had a clue about that too? A man w/ a disorder..or a creature resembling a man?

4) Lastly, I realize dreams are weird....but doing your lesbian sister was just adding an ecchhh factor to the mix.

Wish I could reply. I would like to know as well. I caught probably the last 20 minutes of it (so about 1/4 of the movie) but it seemed intriguing. Probably b/c I just am curious how it began. I was curious why she threw he belt up, don't know if it was an attempt for him to grab on to and pull her up or if it had some kind of powers. Thankfully I missed some of the "weird" stuff. Saw all the candles he had and so I figured there was some kind of infatuation going on with Spike and that girl.

I too saw it last weekend so probably won't come on again until the next "Splatterday" a year from now!!

Spoilers!!!

Here is what you missed:

It basically starts w/ survivor girl (the short sniveling, whiny lesbian). She's driving, while listening to a happy 40's Disney style song. Her female lover is asleep next to her. The Heroine & her boyfriend (who's also the driver's brother) .... were also asleep in the back seat.

From the get go, the 1st scene really focuses in on that belt for several seconds....so I wasn't sure if they were attempting to relay a message about the Rose Belt....or just doing a crotch shot of the Heroine. Reason being, just prior to this, the driver was reaching over to hold her sleeping lover's hand & or stroke her leg. The driver's lover pulls away & turns to face the door, in her sleep.
Then the driver looks quite longingly through the rear view mirror at her brother & then the Heroine's Rose Belt....or crotch?

A 3 pronged spike causes a blow out, as the spike is thrown into the side of the tire. You see the car have a sudden blow out & driver losing control of the car, swerving to & fro for about 2 miles (it seems). A smart person would've stopped the car, but she continues to step on the gas & drive. She eventually leaves the paved road & continues out of control for quite a long stretch, in the dirt. All the while the passenger's are being thrown about inside the car & are finally awakened...that is, except the driver's brother....who's slept through everything (which would've been impossible, unless he was drunk or drugged).

Cut to the brother's weird dream: Where he is inside the car, in the back seat, alone. The car is lit up eerily with X-mas or disco lights & its glowing w/ a greenish light. He is talking on a regular style (neon yellow, land line telephone - w/ an old fashioned style hand set). His conversation is about telling someone (on the other end...possibly the Heroine? If so, he is having a prophetic dream about his girlfriend & Spike) that the guy isn't any good for them.
The next scene has his Sister climbing into the back seat w/him, while Sis straddles his lap (lapdance style) telling her Brother that she never really appreciated him the way he deserved. Both start kissing....then reality hits, where everyone is trying to jostle him awake. He awakens & groggily gets out to check the tires. He finds the 3 pronged spikes in the side of the tire. He pulls it out & conceals it in his pocket, when the girls ask what happened? (so as not to frighten them). He lies & says they just had a blow out.

They then hear these eerie howls & screams echoing through the forest. Boyfriend goes further out into the forest, to check it out. He gets spiked through the abdomen & carotid in his neck. The girls run back into the car, for safety, leaving the car door wide open (Duh!) & they also leave the brother/ boyfriend outside. The car gets rocked violently to & fro...seeming like something is on the roof of it. When this passes, they get out to check on boyfriend. The driver's lover seems to have an immense amount of medical knowledge, as she attempts to render first aid. She annoyingly recites quite a bit of medical jargon, about his injuries & what they need to do for him & the consequences, if things are done incorrectly.

The boyfriend's body suddenly gets yanked away from them & dragged away through the brush. They girls try to decide whether to go after him, or go & get help. Sister wants to leave her brother there & go get help, along w/ Heroine who agrees that this would be the best way, too. The forceful lover wants to go after him, while they can still track him & help him.

Focusing on the Rose Belt again.....Then the Heroine looks down at that Rose Belt, touches it & falls down unconscious. The passenger/ lesbian lover says "She did not just faint, did she?" They drag her to the car & put her in the back. Heroine awakens (possibly faking the faint) & gets out to look for her boyfriend.

So that's pretty much the beginning that you missed, right up until Spike comes into the picture:

Spike renders first aid to the Heroine's abdominal injury that she received from tackling Spike, trying to assist her boyfriend who's lying helpless & still alive.
Spike drags Heroine away, in a net, to his lair....where he has her change into a princess style yellow ball gown, so she looks more like the princess he dreams her to be.

3rd Focus in that darned Rose Belt.....Here is where you notice, yet again, the belt...Heroine has fastened it over the yellow ball gown (it doesn't go w/ the dress, by any stretch of the imagination). So I wanted to know, yet again, what's the deal with this stupid Rose Belt?
I wish they would have elaborated, since they seem to focus on it so much....unless I missed it, or a scene was deleted & ended up on the cutting room floor?
Maybe Spike gave the belt to her when they were children? That would make sense....or maybe the fact that he remembers her loving roses....since his paintings have her enveloped in roses & the bedroom that he made up for her is entwined in vines & many roses. I guess we're supposed to correlate that love of roses w/the belt.
I like the 1st scenario...w/ Spike giving her the belt as a present when they were kids. Then it would make sense, when on the 4th focus on the Rose Belt, Heroine finally removes it at the cliff side.... This would be symbolic of her attempting to make the final break from Spike. She is angry at him for killing her lover & wants Spike to let her go back to civilization....so..... if Spike had given her the belt & she finally removes it, then it has no meaning for her anymore....just as he doesn't have any meaning for her anymore, either. (I like that scenario best)!

A majority of the film (about 75% of it) is really just about Spike obsessing over Heroine (verbally) & reminiscing about their past. Hope this helps!

Thanks so much lambert-20!!! You really did help fill in just about everything. It would be nice if they would have this on one of the premium channels just in case they are leaving some scenes out for time allotment, although listed as only 80 min. it seems like everything should be included. I have learned in watching movies over the years that some of the really bizarre ones and ones that make me feel like I just lost those "however many" minutes can SOMETIMES be ones that there is no explanation for, they just leave it up to the viewer. In those kind of movies I would much rather have them explain what is going on (like with the rose belt) then to be left forever wondering about the symbolism. Obvious he is the thorns and she is the rose but stil, i like some kind of explanation. i like your idea about the possibility there was some type of friendship as little kids and then something happened. i love the "imdb" site and have been using it for years. it has helped me "solve" some of those "what is this supposed to mean" scenes but then sometimes i am still left with nothing.

Thanks again for taking the time to write out such a detailed explanation!! Much appreciated!!! Even though it never explained to either of us what the rose belt meant!!! ;)

Hi Lauriemacc,
Yeah, it'd be nice to be able to watch this again, now that you mentioned the correlation between Spike being the Thorn & her being the Rose (symbolically). I never thought of it like that, (went right over my head).

Or....maybe he's just the Thorn in her side, hehehe! Below is actually my idea of their past & present relationship & the reason's for it. Sorry about the length, but there were many reasons why I believed they were not only friends in their past, but somewhat lovers.......

Stuff was said + their actions really lead the viewer to believe that they'd had a crush like, romantic relationship which had started when they were children & likely continued into their teens (possibly even a bit sexual - as much as one could get w/ Spike) & here is why I thought this:

[First their actions]

a) She never fights to free herself & she willingly goes w/ him...even while she's in the net being dragged away. She could fight her way out, but she initially doesn't. As if she wants to see more & what he's offering her. Basically, in the beginning....she's a willing participant. & I don't believe it's for her beau's sake.

b) Also, she seems mesmerized by him, when he reminisces about their past. As if she's under his spell.

c) You see what he does w/ her....his actions need no explanation. They're obvious.

* The 1st time you really get to see a "full facial view" of Spike is when the two Lesbians lovers are treking through the forest toward Spike's lair (after Heroine gets dragged away by Spike). The tough Lesbian (who quotes medical terms) comes to the lair & finds a shrine of the Heroine w/many photos & drawings of her.

Taking a closer look, she realizes the creature obviously knew the Heroine & had for quite some time...as she sees several childhood photos of Heroine & Spike. (They look to be approx. 8-10 years old). The photos are framed side by side, w/ Spike on rt & Heroine on lft. As she looks closer at the photos, she discover's Spike's not a creature at all, but a man. Sniveling scaredy lesbian is still convinced Spike is some kind of weird animal creature.

The scene cuts to Spike & Heroine (who's legs are tightly bound & trapped in netting). She isn't fighting to free herself, at all...but is instead, enjoying the ride while being dragged to his lair. You then hear Spike's pet mountain lion scream from afar.

Cutting back to strong willed Lesbian at the lair....She attempts to remove another photo of Spike, which is posted covering a small window in the lair's wall. She suddenly comes face to face w/ the lion, scaring the bejesus out of her.

Upon hearing his cat, Spike hauls butt back to his lair, dragging the Heroine behind him. He finds the photo from the window, out of it's frame & rumpled on the ground w/ slashes through it. (Apparently, lion scratched at strong willed Lesbian & struck the photo instead)

Now, Spike realizes that they're not alone.

[Now for the comments]

a) This was easy....they both openly admitted to a past romantic relationship. How far they took it, tho...was just lightly touched on. Also Spike saw things a lil' differently, than his Heroine. His feelings & views were far more intense.

Several comments are exchanged between the Heroine & Spike, after arriving @ his lair. Their comments make the viewer believe there was definently something romantic between the two of them in the past & likely even the present. Initially you get a sense of romantic tension....that is, before the poop hits the fan.

Comments such as:

** Regarding her being suddenly absent in his life 7 yrs prior. She states, "My father never meant anything by it, he just thought you might hurt me". This was after Spike said to her, "I took this bike from him (the dilapidated motorcycle in the vines)...but he took something far more precious & valuable from me". (Meaning Daddy stole Spike's girl away)

** Spike reminisces back to when Heroine used to have terrible nightmares & wasn't able to sleep, during her childhood. (Why was she having these nightmares)? They never explain this.... unless I missed it. I imagined that her Mom likely died when she was younger or Mom walked out on her & her Dad.... (Heroine's Mom's was never really mentioned, as I recalled)

Spike then describes the times when he'd come to her window at night & sing her to sleep...helping her through her nightmares. He says he was always there for her, when other's weren't. She agrees as Spike then sings the little childhood ditty that Heroine says sounds familiar & she remembers from childhood. Spike says something like, "Yes, because your father taught it to me".

** Lastly Spike tries to put the moves on her, but her mind is on her dying boyfriend, who's lost a lot of blood & might possibly be cocooned in spider webbing like a fly. Spike attempts first to touch her abdomen, while she's lying down. He subtly works up to her breasts...making an awkward attempt at getting busy w/ her. She stops him & pulls away.

He says something like, "You used to like it when I touched you" & "You said that you loved me"
Then she comments something to the effect of her losing emotional control around him & falling for him all over again, like before. She says that Spike does something to her that affects her emotions & makes her weak & fall for him all over again.

Strong Pheromones, or what?

Heroine says she can't help herself re: falling in love w/ Spike again, but realizes she must live in the real world....which wouldn't be w/him in his lair. She likens Spike & his lair to the mythological underworld of Hades & Spike as the God, Hades.
She further likens herself to the mythological part time queen of the underworld, Persephone....who used to be a light & happy being & goddess of the harvest.....who was kidnapped by Hades & taken below, against her will, to the underworld of the dead..... There Persephone was held captive for part of each year (hence the meaning of the change of the seasons & Persephone's time in the underworld ... her "dead of winter") or.... Winter, being the time Persephone must go back below to Hades each year.
Our Heroine attempts to barter for her release, promising to return to Spike for part of each year.

I took the above statements by Spike & our Heroine + the photos to mean that they'd definitely had some sort of childhood love affair 7+ years earlier. They were likely childhood sweethearts/ each other's 1st loves, maybe in a very innocent way. I surmised that due to her Mom not being around...(leaving or dying, whatever) this loss left her & her father vulnerable & that she was lonely. This loneliness lead to nightmares. (just me guessing & filling in gaps)

Spike comes into the picture during this time, but how?. It'd been nice if they delved into it more. As Spike's love obsession grew, Daddy thought it was unhealthy & worried for his daughter's welfare...that she'd eventually get hurt. I mean, as much as Spike loved her...he had some incredible outbursts. For this reason, Daddy had to stifle the situation. Daddy either rode Spike out to the woods on that delapitated motorcycle & left Spike there....(w/Spike subsequently taking that bike from him).....

or....

The another scenario could be that when Daddy thought Spike became uncontrollable & a danger to his daughter, he packed them up in the night & moved away.....abandoning Spike.

Though Spike is very intelligent, well read, soft spoken, and can be loving & sweet....He definently has control & impulse issues. He throws temper tantrums at the drop of a hat. He also has no people skills, due to lack of human interaction. Therefore he misreads facial expressions, signals & gestures. He can't grow emotionally due to his circumstances & for this reason, believes he can just take up where he left off with her, 7 years later. Aspergers syndrome would be a good way of describing him. Combine that along with Obsessive Compulsive & Anger Issues, he's kind of a mess.

Basically they leave a lot up to the viewer to figure out when it comes to their childhood pasts. I see this as a modern day Beauty & the Beast w/ a dash of Romeo & Juliette & a bit of Phantom of the Opera / Erik's character type mixed in.

This came on last Saturday night (by accident) on The Movie Channel's (TMC's) Splatterday Saturday. I say accident, cause the Vincent D'Onofrio movie "Don't Go Into The Woods" from 2010' was actually advertised. On Splatterday Saturday, there are usually 2 horror movies shown back to back on the TMC channel. I knew of the Vincent D'Onofrio movie, because I had just seen it recently...so when this came on, I was going "What the heck is this?" The premise wasn't the same, nor were the actors...yet they were in the woods, just like in D'Onofrio's flick.

I'd never seen "Spike" before, so I was dying to know what this movie was, as it was playing? I too love to check out IMDB for premises & opinions, etc to help me decide on watchin a movie, or for figuring out a movie that leaves too many holes in the plot. I love spoilers too, but then again...I read books from back to front, heheh. Can't stand anticipation of the suspense.

Regarding coming in on a movie already playing & missing parts of a movie.....or needing more of an explantion.

There's something you can do...if you missed part of a movie (at least this is what I do & it works out wonderfully, most of the time).....go onto "Youtube" or "Hulu". If you can't get the full movie for free (usually you can w/ older ones) on Youtube....then you can at least get bits & pieces...possibly of the scene you may have missed, to fill in the blanks. Some movies, I've been able to catch in full on "Hulu" for free. Just a thought anyway, but it works!
Take care!

Thank-you for your insight. I found the movie tragic. Maybe their past kept the girl from being strong around the beast. What he did to her boyfriend was deliberate. How would she be able to forget?

Quite a write up Lambert, I'm going to pay attention if it comes on tv again.
