The most hypocritical aliens ever...

They come here using technologies (nanotechnology, EMP, who else knows what futuristic physics) and they're about to kill us off at the point when our technology is getting so much better, that we'll be able to undo most of the harms we did to our planet.

Aliens' "good" idea: "Let's kill them before that. Well, nobody killed us when we were developing ours, but that will give them a lesson. Unfortunately there won't be anyone to learn from it. We're watching you waiting for you to change, to fit our idea of how civilization should be. But you're still just you. A different way. We don't tolerate different. But you maybe at 99.9999% of making it but we will still eradicate you." Hypocrisy of the highest order.

Let's ignore the fact that they kill us, to prevent us killing other species. Ironic. I would not believe them a word. They probably thought: "Let's find a vague reason to destroy a potential competition." I know that movie reflects irrationality of eco-movements. Even a kid in a movie can destroy their "arguments" with one sentence. Of course Keanu changes his mind immediately, because he had no argument in the first place. Another point for "destroy competition, because we can" hypothesis.
