The Novels

I loved all four novels, wish they had been able to follow-up to City of Ember movie with movies for the other three books

The People of Sparks

The Prophet of Yonwood and

The Diamond of Darkhold

I also enjoyed reading the books. Too bad they probably won't get made into movies.

Yeah, meanwhile a lot of less interesting book series are getting way more attention and are already slated to film their sequels.

Looking at you, Maze Runner.

Having said that, the sequels to this book do diverge from the atmosphere a bit much in the way the Ghormenghast series sort of meandered towards the end (to be fair the writer was suffering from dementia).

They only purchased the rights to The People of Sparks, but a poor ad campaign and the following box office flop of the movie caused them to scrap the series.

I spent 6 months eagerly awaiting the release of City of Ember and they never even showed it in my city. What the hell? I live in a large city with 5 multiplex cinemas and I would have had to drive an hour away to the only theater showing it in another town. I had to wait to rent it. No wonder it did poorly if they weren't planning on showing it anywhere.

They could have even condensed the other novels into one longer movie. Yonwood isn't intrical to Ember, just interesting. But Darkhold should be made to show everyone the fate of the great city itself. I found it exciting that they actually returned and Lina gets to say goodbye.

following box office flop

Not surprising seeing how much they changed or left out. I did get the chance to see it in the dollar theater 45 min from my house when it came out. They probably would omit Yonwood as it really has nothing to do with Lina and Doon. Darkhold is my favorite of the series. My favorite part is when after they start trading the diamonds to the end.
