Why use the digging cart?

Just saw this on HBO, not a bad film. Ok, it was a bad film. Seems like the director had one vision and the editor had another. When they get on the underground digging machine, they go to the 'dark area', cover up the machine, exchange dialog and then uncover the machine and go back? Why even do that? Not like they got poppy and went back using that same machine. Did someone not story board this movie and figured "Ah, let just wing it. ACTION!"

They used the digging machine to escape the room they were hiding in bihind the greenhouse. Once they got the little girl they had to go to the generator so they didn't nees the digging machine.
I'm not totally defending this movie. I remember when it first came out... I was a little disappointed. It definetly felt like they made it spacifically for kids. I thought it was a good concept for a movie and wish they would have put a little more action in it and tried a little harder all around. On the other hand... I just watched it (on HBO) with my young children and they enjoyed it. I do kind of appreciate "kids movies" that aren't completely horrible.
