Unfortunate that people typecast Directors

I remember seeing Scorsese's Casino and loved it more than Goodfellas. It showed Robert De Niro perfectly. It was at this point that I knew Scorsese was yet to make the film that showed his true talents, without the gangsterish and violence aspects that are part of his previous films.

So, Hugo is that film.

Hugo has many elements to it but the over riding aspect is about film and how film transforms and changed the world and lives of everybody.

So it is a shame that many people feel let down that this is not another Scorsese guns, violence and/or terror film. I am sure if Hugo ended with Hugo getting all gangster like in a Paris station this would be in the top 250 as people will feel vindicated and relieved that another Scorsese masterpiece to fuel the vacuum for testosterone the 70s and 80s forced upon us, is now given.

This is a great great film because the message is epic and the film making styles pay respect through that message.

As with Birdman, we can only say that you see the super hero flying man, or the tragedy. For those that see the super hero flying man, Enjoy.

Well said. Another example is Wes Craven who made a film which I haven't seen (Music of the Heart) but is clearly a gentle family friendly film compared to his usual horror.
