How could people possibly hate this?

Great, great film. Even the 2D version on Netflix was beautiful, in my opinion. 9/10. Second favorite movie of 2011, behind only Deathly Hallows Part 2. And the only reason Deathly Hallows Part 2 ranks higher for me is because of the sentimental values it holds for me.

What is about this particular picture that has drawn out so many people who seemingly just want to hate it because...well, I actually don't know why or how so many people could needlessly hate it. And trust me, I'm not a true cinephile or pretentious about movies in any way, but I can appreciate a damn good film when I see one.

The most shocking thing about the film is that it was directed by Scorsese, the same man who has brought us such "family" films in the past as Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, GoodFellas, The Departed, and The Wolf of Wall Street. It's kind of hard to wrap my mind around the fact that the same fellow who did those films, also did this one. But he was, of course, fantastic as usual.

I can see major structural flaws in the film, but it's still entertaining and beautiful.

Many people, especially in the US, have an almost instinctive hatred for anything at all to do with France. Think for instance of the US Congress officially and deliberately insulting France by renaming one the dishes served in the Congress cafeteria into 'Freedom Fries' ... it's just one of the many spiteful and hateful manifestations that far too many Americans think is a way to show their 'patriotism' ... it is cheap and childish and spills over into many domains, films amongst them.

Maybe but not true for everyone, like me. I love France and French-ness but this film was boring and I just didn't connect to it at all. All The French-ness was even so artificial looking. Was any of it even filmed in Paris?

"Hugo" is unlike any other film Martin Scorsese has ever made, and yet possibly the closest to his heart: a big-budget, family epic in 3-D, and in some ways, a mirror of his own life. We feel a great artist has been given command of the tools and resources he needs to make a movie about — movies.

Personal taste. Believe it or not, we all have various opinions & taste of entertainment.
Me personally? I'm watching the movie a second time right now (yes, even while being on my phone) and my personal opinion is that it's "ok". Good acting, directing & Filming style. Interesting story.
I'm not a fan of the writing tho.
Thank God we weren't born with all the same tastes and opinions.

OP isn't saying no one is allowed to have this film, how dare they!!1!

They're just curious as to how someone could not like it. Which tbh I'm curious about too.

I really really liked this movie and googled all about Melies once it was finished. It really fascinated me.

Are you going to all your favorite movies and asking how people could hate them? Everything is hated by someone. I enjoyed this film but can see that it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea.
