what's with the wrestling aspect of the story line?

It's kind of difficult to follow the story when one's spanish is limited. What and how is the circus like wrestling segment relavent to the story? How did Lola and Marcus get involved with the wrestling crowd. The rest of the subsquent story line is understandable.
The wrestling part of the story is like a Fellini movie.
