I have to agree with you. At least the TV series actually did try to keep it in line with the film.
Besides, Ariel's Beginning has so many disconnects to the film in terms of continuity and characterization that to call it a "prequel" is simply a bald-faced lie. Marina del Ray managing to surface while celebrating her victory and getting away with it is just one thing they got completely wrong with the film (as the film strongly hinted at a surface ban). There's also the problem with Ariel's sisters' birth orders being switched around (even ignoring the TV series, the original film itself already strongly implied their birth order in the Daughters of King Triton number, and it certainly wasn't the order used in Ariel's Beginning), Ariel doesn't even seem to develop her interest in humanity, despite that being her most notable trait, arguably moreso than her rebellious nature.
