I'm so confused with the Pirates. What's supposed to be happening?!

Were the pirates hunting mermaids at the beginning? But no, that can't be because they just crashed their own ship into the rocks and then presumably sunk themselves. That's no way to do hunting.

So then why did they crash? Was it supposed to be some play on the legends of Sirens drawing in sailors to their doom? But that would seem pretty random, especially since that doesn't flow with the established narrative of the previous two movies and the mermaids in the beginning were clearly just having fun and minding their own business. They didn't want to draw in any humans or sink ships. But maybe it's supposed to be implied that they unintentionally drew in the ship to it's doom... ?? 

Okay then, assuming that's somehow the case, why make it a PIRATE ship. It could have been any random passenger ship, but making it a pirate ship immediately implies sinister intent. Except that apparently no, there wasn't. They just crashed and sunk their own ship. Was Jack Sparrow drunk at the wheel again?

And I could also ask why Athena just stood right in the path when it seemed like there was more than ample opportunity to get out of the way. Deer in the headlights effect maybe... 

But I'll just stick with asking what the deal was supposed to be with the pirates. If it was supposed to be taken as the evil humans deliberately murdered Triton's wife, then I think they should have made it more clear that they were actively hunting the mermaids, but maybe that would be too dark for Disney. If it's the alternative, though,- just a freak accident -then I don't know why they bothered to make the ship a PIRATE ship. Just make it a generic passenger ship.
