Has anyone seen this film yet?

I read the background info about Esther Robinson's discovery of the films made by her deceased uncle & his history w/the Warhol Factory. Has this documentary been shown outside of film festivals yet? Has anyone seen the films of Danny Williams?

reply

She said last night we were her 4th audience - so I would say no - not beyond festivals yet. I can tell you it will be well worth the wait. I was blown away by Danny's work shown throughout the film. Esther's movie is a beautiful poem about him, his talent, his complexity and lost place in the annals of history.

Thank you for the information :) I look forward to seeing this film.

This very interesting film is being shown in the US on the Sundance Channel today (right now). No cable; try renting at Netflix. Worth it.

I am going to the screening of Danny Williams' films tomorrow night, and will be seeing Esther's film on Sunday. Very curious to see new footage of my uncle.

Saw Danny and Esther's films last weekend. Amazing footage. Really cool stuff. Esther also got some great interviews for her film. Very worth seeing if you have the chance.

Warhol created so much roadkill.

Warhol didn't "create" roadkill, he just gravitated toward naturally eccentric people who were usually either damaged as result of difficult pasts, or became that way from being treated as freakish outcasts. Andy was one of few people during that time who had an appreciation for their individuality and allowed them a means of self expression among people who related with them. It was probably this kind of freedom combined with the decadence of the time period that led to their downfalls, but Warhol never encouraged any kind of negative behaviour nor did he create these people in any way. The parents and doctors were the ones sending children to mental hospitals, keeping them drugged up, and giving them electroshock treatments all their lives.

Warhol definitely was a user. Yes he did gravitate towards eccentrics, but he used them and in most cases threw them away when they stopped interesting him, or made a fuss about the lack of credits of funds they received from the projects the contributed to.

You can't just throw around accusations like "he used them" if they weren't exploited in any way. Did he promise them anything he didn't deliver? Use their work without permission? Get anyone hooked on drugs? No. Of course he didn't want them working for him after he lost interest, no employer would. And do you think it's a coincidence that they all wanted to hang around someone who happened to be famous, influential, and getting lots of press?
