New Series: Hold The Fun + Gossip

Series 3 Episode 1 does not hold great promise. It's such a shame as I was really looking forward to Series 3 and gutted it was the final series.

The close friendship and gossipy Sex In the City style evenings over a glass of wine was a core element of this show.

The new series with the "rift" which I'm guessing will turn out to do with Katie shagging Trudi's husband (or even if she doesn't being wrongly suspected of it) - is all a bit too dark.

Too dark - both literally and metaphorically. (Did anyone else thing that the filming seemed very dark).

Jessica was a character I loved - really fun and "don't care". But now she's all serious and about the IVF.

What we liked about this show was basically the glamour, gossip and fun. I know there were serious bits (Trudi's ex husband, Siobhan and Hari's marriage etc) but basically it was a wine-fuelled feel good show.

Don't mess with the formula. Such a shame.

I'm not sure that they would have been wise to have written more of the same, not after 2 seasons of it. I thought series 2 was the end, and did wonder what they could do to upset the happy ending. They HAD to change tack. Jessica got pregnant at the end of season 2, and something had to explain the lack of baby in season 3. It would have been silly to see her saying 'la la la I had a miscarriage.. ok, as normal then girls!' They could alternatively have chosen to let her have the baby but the unplanned baby story is there already there with Siobhan - it would have been too much. Series 2 finished with Kate being thrown a lifeline by a very betrayed Dan. It's totally realistic that it didn't work out and that it would affect her as it has.

From what I've seen so far, I'm with the writers. It would have been banal and much less convincing if they'd just let the girls continue bouncing around in that 'la la la' and wine style that you like, given that their lives transformed quite a bit during season 2.

I think we could have done without another IVF storyline.
It's much more likely that 2 out of the 4 women would have experienced an accidental pregnancy rather than 2 out of the 4 needing IVF.
I am wondering what the rift is about though... surely it being about Katie shagging Trudi's hubby is too obvious, plus I can't imagine it'd have them all hating eachother- they'd all just hate Katie wouldn't they? I thought it might be about people being secretive about lending money/ knowing about Jess' husbands financial probs and not telling her, but again I can't see how it'd cause a huge rift between them all- just Jess would fall out with whoever deceived her i.e. Siobhan.
Oh well, we'll see soon I suppose...

What about Siobhan and Dominic - he was a love sick puppy in the last episode and now he's getting married to someone else or is this him trying to make Siobhan jealous???

I always thought Mistresses was a bit dark to begin with - I mean, Katie helped her married lover commit suicide, right off the bat! That's pretty dark to me. As for her fling with Richard in Series 3, it's really just more of the same pattern of hers, of falling for unavailable or inappropriate men (Dan aside). Siobhan's Looking for Mr. Goodbar routine in Series 2 (and the dissolution of her marriage) was also dark.

If anything, I found the characters annoying this go-around. How many married men is Katie going to hook up with? How many mixed signals is Siobhan going to send to Dominick? And here we go again, with Trudi meeting a man thru the bakery and trying to get the attention and support that she's not getting from Richard!

To me, it's like they're running out of things to do with the characters. Giving Jess cancer and killing Richard off were interesting twists. Btw, whatever happened with Natalie? Is Trudi going to be expected to keep up with the payments now, and will Amy have some kind of relationship with her mum? These story lines pop up and then get swept under the rug.
