I was under the impression...


...that in real life, all the forensic work and fingerprinting were done by CSI's and they gave their results to the detectives. Or was I wrong?

Fingerprinting can be done by criminalists,"CSIs" or Latent Print Specialists. Detectives don't normally do the printing, though this may vary by state and jurisdiction. However, for the purposes of this show, the teams were filling all the different roles at the scene.

what Tammy said is correct. However, we all know that TV stretches and doctors real life as needed. If you watch CSI enough times, you'll see a CSI tell a deputy to arrest someone, when obviously they have no authority to do so.
