Not to mention that the cops coerced the brother into confessing in the real case.

That's weird, I was sure with the crystal meth in the room that it was related to the brother or the brother's friend somehow. Thanks though.

In the real case the father was never a suspect. He never admitted to owning the meth either. I have a sneaking suspicion it belonged to the transient Richard Tuite, but I've never read anything linking it to him. As for the kid, the interrogation was much different. It wasn't a simple few questions, it was basically a psychological torture session.

They spent 11 hours grilling a kid who's sister just died, which he denied having anything to do with. After hours of pretty much convincing him he did it and threatening him with serious prison time if he didn't confess vs getting him help if he did confess, the kid confessed to murdering his sister, even though while confessing he stated "everything I'm going to tell you is a lie". They had him convinced he killed his sister and blocked out the memory. The police, DA, and the media were saying he was jealous of his sister and had an unhealthy obsession with violent video games. And he dressed in black alot.

They got confessions from two of his friends using similar tactics, though all three immediately withdrew their confessions. The kids spent 7 months in Juvenile hall and just before they were about to go to trial, there was traces of DNA found of the sweater of Richard Tuite. He was seen roaming the neighborhood, banging on doors looking for a girl named tracy. He was also a schizophrenic and a meth user. Police figured he wasn't capable of sneaking into a house in the middle of the night and murdering a girl without waking anyone up, so they let him go.

About four years after the DNA evidence came out Richard Tuite was arrested for her murder . Yes it took four years. He was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter and sentenced to 13 years in prison + 4 years for escaping the courtroom. Yes, the man who was too clumsy to sneak into a house in the middle of the night managed to escaped being handcuffed to a bench and make it a few miles away before being caught again.
