The actual story?

I was trying to find the actual story. I googled it, but I haven't found any websites telling the entire story of what happened. Anyone know where I can find it?

Yes it is. It's also pretty obvious that her family didn't want this movie made.

reply

This incident occured near where we live. Yes it is very real. I remember it vividly from the initial news bulletin to her return to her home town. If you have specific questions i might be able to answer them. In reality Anne never felt comfortable with the attention. Her parents are in agreement with the movie in the hopes that it can in some way help or encourage someone else. It was filmed in Canada for several reasons. One was the actual story started in the plains of Nebraska, farm areas... and went into colorado and further west. It would have been a directors nightmare to actually film in so many areas. It was possible to realistically recreate all those places in the one relatively small area.

reply

Both Anne and her family wanted the story to be told. Anne's father cried three times during their screening.

I remember this very well because I live in Kearney, Nebraska where this happened. It happened on April 6, 2001 in litterally broad daylight. It will be hard to find full articles of this on the internet with this happening in a small town so long ago but if you try to browse http://www.kearneyhub.com they may have some information on there that your looking for. Also try http://www.lincolnjournalstar.com or www.theindependent.com . These are the local newspapers websites and may help in your search for information.

KEARNEY — For Don and Elaine Sluti of Kearney, watching the made-for-TV drama about their daughter’s kidnapping was tough.

“It was hard for me to watch at times,” Don admitted.

But both he and Elaine previewed Sunday’s drama on their daughter Anne Sluti’s 2001 kidnapping earlier last week. Both thought the Lifetime Movie Network and producer Charlene Blaine-Schulenburg captured Anne’s overall story and her resourcefulness, terror and bravery.

Don said he was emotional as he watched his life portrayed on national TV, while Elaine said she was more reserved.

“There weren’t any real surprises here. We knew the whole story pretty much from Day 1,” she said.

Elaine was prepared to leave the room if the movie got too emotional. But she didn’t have to.

As for Anne, she went to the grocery store while her six-day ordeal played out to millions of people.

“That’s something that happened to her a long time ago, and she’s put it behind her,” Don said.

“She’s definitely not focused or dwelling on this. She’s living her life,” Elaine said.

The movie gave Sherry Morrow, a close friend of the Slutis, the chills.

“It almost made you sick to your stomach, even though you know the outcome was good in the end. I really felt for Don, Elaine, Tom (Sluti, Anne’s brother) and Anne as they went through the movie.

“Rehashing it just kind of brings it back to the surface.”

Steve Jensen, a former Buffalo County Sheriff’s investigator, agreed. He said the emotional parts of the movie came at the beginning and the end.

“I think they portrayed the abduction at the mall pretty well, as I know it happened, and I think at the end where he was crying and she was running to the cop,” he said.

Jensen was the first officer to suggest Anthony Steven Wright, also known as Tony Zappa, as a suspect two days after Anne disappeared. The Mall of America in Minneapolis had been shut down days earlier after a man matching Zappa’s description made threats and terrorized people.

Morrow, Jensen and Kearney Police Department Sgt. Tony Cordova, who was the on-call investigator when Sluti was kidnapped, said the show was fairly accurate.

There were only a few portrayals in the movie Jensen thought were inaccurate: scenes that showed police set up in the Slutis garage, and Anne’s brother Tom punching a police officer in the stomach.

Jensen summed up the movie and Anne’s case in an e-mail to the Hub:

“I have always thought there were two stories in this case. This story about the family and the emotions of losing a daughter to an unknown assailant, and the heroine that is Anne Sluti, who quickly reasoned control of her abductor and in the process, saved herself in the face of horrible circumstances.

“The second story, is the ‘behind-the-scenes’ 24/7/365 work the entire combined investigative unit did. The emotions that we all felt were so much parallel to the Slutis’.”

In hindsight, Jensen said, the movie should send a message to all victims of crime to not give up and to comply with their attackers in order to stay alive.

“I am proud that I was part of the team that worked on the Anne Sluti case. We did all we could do to the best of our ability, training and resources,” Jensen wrote. “But Anne Sluti’s resolve to save herself brought her home safely.”

I spent three years with Tony here in Minnesota... I was looking forward to seeing if VanDerBeek could nail just how Tony can be. Not even close.

reply

Could you elaborate? How well did you know him?

reply

Your not exatly one to be talking about Crazy Kristi. I dont know many Mothers that would walk out on their children, for their own self problems. Your family has its own problems or your son wouldn't be getting court marshalled for doing drugs while in the Military and sitting in the brigg. That is what your wonderful parenting skills have done for your son. So dont act so high and Mighty. Iam his sister and I know the hell we went through as children and I know the things he put you through, but dont go pointing fingers JESUS. You take your little boy to Hooters clubs to see tramps at 10 years old, now he messed up his life. Also why are you writing my cousin Matt, on Facebook, I thought you were too good for all of us Zappas. You act like your *beep* dont stink, you are no better. And think you grew up in a some what normal house.

reply

I suppose you would be the closest to the real story here.. so I'm curious where abouts this story ended? In the movie it says Rollins Montana on Flathead Lake, and I live near Rollins on Flathead Lake, moved here shortly after the incident, but never heard of anything about it. Do you have a basic idea of where the house was that it ended? A town name, or was Rollins the closest?

reply

By Rollins yes, I do not know the address where it was. he did move all over the place with her. It may say in some archives for the news there. People dont talk about it all over there?

reply

looks like i struck a nerve! not my intention.
would you say that tony was portrayed accurately in the movie, then? i don't. that was my point. also, if you believe tony did not idolize your father, i apologize for the statement.
as for everything else... wow.
take care.
Kristi :)

reply

Wow is right, some people. Tony may have had a chance at a normal life if it wasn't for our father. He knows that as well as all of our family. Matt also went through the same things. He had guns held to his head too. And who would Idolize someone like that. I grew up with Tony, we both cried cause of the things we went through. Maybe you never heard that. But, how you would have gotten he idolized him from what you witnessed, is beyond me. You where there when there where fights between them. I know he hurt you, but your not perfect, no one is.

reply

i have updated my previous post to remove the "idolized" sentence.
again, it was not intended to offend you or your family.

You'll be hard up to find details on this story. I went to school and worked with Anne. This event hit the town hard. I don't know if the family wanted the story told but I do know that Anne did not seem to want the attention from what had happened (and who could blame her?) Anne is a very strong and brave person and I hope this movie shows this.

Many, many people have been horrifically abused as children and they do not go on to murder, rape, kidnap, torture. What happened to him was horrible and surely ruined his humanity, but, regardless, he is what he is, and can't continue to live in the world. His parents are evil, but that does not change the fact that he is a psychopath. Not everyone who has evil parents become evil themselves.

Couldn't agree more. While I'm sure his upbringing was terrible, being beaten as a kid & infant (according to his sister) that doesn't take away the fact that he kidnapped and repeatedly raped this girl. He put everyone through hell.

As a parent his abduction of Anne in broad daylight was really scary to watch. And I have a feeling that he might have continued with kidnapping girls hadn't he been stopped. Can't say for sure of course.

Dear Warden. You were right. Salvation lies within.
