why didn't she run off when he was looking in the caravan near the end

she's on the track team at school so you'd have thought she'd have been a fast runner, but instead of taking off when he was busy checking in the empty caravans, she decides to waste time having a wash. She could have been gone before he even realised, why show us her running at the start of the film if that had nothing to do with it
