Boothe shouted "Sic Semper Tyrannis", which Means "Ever Thus with Tyrants". As another poster noted, it was the State motto if Virginia, but it was meant to have a double meaning, as many Southerners considered Lincoln to be a tyrant who invaded their country and forced the abolitionist philosophy on them and their way of life.

This signature really brings the room together, Does It Not?

"as many Southerners considered Lincoln to be a tyrant who invaded their country and forced the abolitionist philosophy on them and their way of life."

Poor babies, poor little slaveholders. **plays the world's smallest violin**

LOL. But it was more complicated than that. It wasn't like it is now where we know for sure that Trump supporters are evil and his opponents are good. Not everyone in the South was evil just because they were in the South, and not everyone was pro-slavery or secessionist there. Same in the North, not everyone was good there.

Where did I say all Southerners were evil, pro-slavery and secessionist? The ones who considered Lincoln a "tyrant" who invaded "their country" (lol) and "forced the abolitionist philosophy on them and their way of life", however, were those things, and those were the points I responded to above. So I don't see what you're arguing about.

Anyone who supported the Confederacy was vile and an enemy of human dignity. Slavery in the US south was even more hideous and barbaric than ancient Roman slavery because at least Roman slavery wasn't racial in character and didn't dehumanize whole races of people based on the color of their skin. The Confederacy was one of the most atrocious political entities that ever existed. It deserved to be destroyed, as did anyone who supported it. Frankly the slaveholders and their supporters and sympathizers got off way easier than they should have.

Well reconstruction had a good beginning by Radical Republicans (yes ironic how the parties reversed), but there was the big backlash that lasted another century. Then after a great leap forward with JFK, MLK, LBJ, etc. we have another great leap backward with Trump.
But anyway going back to the film, it implies Mary was innocent and convicted of guilt by association. Even her son John who was presumed guilty was freed. But you're saying the whole family is guilty because they were Confederates directly or indirectly. Not true.
