Great for history class movie day, but nothing beyond that!

I happened to find this movie today on HBO (probably airing it to showcase their latest 'it girl' Evan Rachel Wood since she's gotten rave reviews for Westworld) and was drawn in by the story. I was impressed with Robin Wright in the lead and ERW's performance as the daughter as well as James McAvoy, Stephen Root, and Kevin Kline's respective performances.

The rest of the cast, however, put this movie at a "We're studying the fallout from the Civil War in American History class" level. What was supposed to be humorous banter and scandalous gossip between the wealthy Yankees sounded and came across like the crew at TMZ gathered around to talk about the latest Angelina Jolie news. Alexis Bledel, who is no newcomer to period pieces, should know by now how a proper lady of the 19th century spoke. It takes you out of a picture that would really otherwise be great.
