Not Everyone can Hear

It's hard to imagine in the 21st century that I would find a new DVD movie that doesn't have closed captions nor English subtitles. Not everyone can hear. I got everything ready to watch, popped the popcorn, started the movie and noticed there was no "Setup" in the menu to select English subtitles. Started the movie and no closed captions either. No way for me to watch this movie and enjoy it since I can't hear anything being said. Major disappointment. I think the last time I found a movie with no English subtitles was for a movie from the 60's. But at least they had Closed Captions. This movie had neither. I checked the DVD box and sure enough, no mention of CC nor subtitles. I thought it was mandatory by now but I guess not. I have to pay closer attention to the boxes. Guess they didn't want handicapped people watching the movie.

I agree. I kept asking my husband to tell me what they said. The sound level on the movie was horrible too. I had it cranked up to level 100 (all the way) and I normally have the sound at level 30. In this day and age I think that's a crime to not have captions...especially when we watched it in Blu Ray! Blockbuster gave me my money back.

Thank you for this comment. It is January 5 and my wife and I just sat down to watch the movie. No CC, no subtitles. I simply cannot believe this. My wife has a significant hearing loss. We rent from Netflix and perhaps we should have investigated beforehand if CC was available. But we didn't and so must return to our books. Wife is 78, I am 81. I hear pretty well but the CC helps when the dialogue is garbled. Again thanks. I wish we had a way to email the producers of the DVD but I have no idea how to do this.

All the more true when you can't make out half of what Kelly MacDonald is saying with her Scottish accent.

Oh really!

I too have a severe hearing impairment and depend on CC for every movie I watch.

When I read the review of it on Netflix and saw the date of 2008, I just assumed it would have closed captioning as a choice.

It didn't and I had to immediately seal it back in the envelope for mailing.

Checking my Netflix account I see where it does not mention CC as available but for a Sundance entry, they (the studio and producer) should be ashamed.

If CC isn't required, it should be. I was stunned that such a lovely film by such a fine actor & company completely slighted the hearing impaired. Shame on them! I have a partial hearing loss; I, too, turned this one up. But in the final scene between the major characters, I have NO IDEA what she said to him that made him sadly leave etc. It didn't matter how much I turned up the sound. So I would love for someone to tell me and help with the ending. Thanks!

Hi jwms68,

> So I would love for someone to tell me and help with the ending.

It's almost two years ago, but here is the dialogue:

Kate: I saw that detective tonight, Frank.
Frank: I know.
Kate: Is it true?
Frank: You don't have to be afraid.
Kate: I am.
Frank: I'd never hurt you. You know I'd never hurt you, don't you?
Kate: I don't know what I know. [pause] I hope god will forgive me.
Frank: You didn't do anything.
Kate: I feel like I did. [pause] Do you remember the first time you saw me.
Frank: Found a girl under a christmas tree.
Kate: I looked up and there you were. [pause] What are we gonna do now, Frank?

That's all. Well, all dialogue - I'm afraid I'm not very certain about the meaning of the ending. Hope it helps anyways ...

For relaxing times, you know.

I 2nd the motion,

Nor do people have to be handicapped. My husband is not and he couldn't make out the Irish accent.

Shame on who ever made this movie without provision for CC.

I live in Australia (zone 4) and our release of the DVD has subtitle options.

Very strange and frustrating for you that your release ( I assume zone 1) didn't have them.

i was surprised to see there were no subtitles. usually that's for cheap unknown movies...i just like using them in general, and i really could have used them for her accent a few times too.

I heard this movie had a TON of trouble getting out the door. Michael Keaton isn't a big press man to begin with, but it seems most of the stuff he did was because he really wanted to get the name of the movie out there. But for the longest time I just could not find this film anywhere! I finally found it online, but I think, if I can, I'll try to edit a version for CC together and get it out to fans of the movie. This is too much of a gem to be unappreciated by all :)

No promises though, I've got a lot of health problems despite being only 24, and never know what may happen next.

I have the same issue with the lack of CC as others who have posted.
