BSG: Blood and Chrome NOT picked up -- good news for Sanctuary

SyFy has decided that, since it has nothing to do with wrestling, ghost hunting, monster make-up or traveling to the destination of truth, BSG: Blood and Chrome will not be picked up to series.

I guess you could interpret this as good news for Sanctuary, since SyFy likes to only carry a few scripted shows, and BSG: B and C would take up one of those slots.

SWEET! Now Syfy needs to get their bums in gear! I feel bad for the people who work on Sanctuary cuz they are kinda getting screwed over here, not knowing whether they have a job or not. Figures crossed for good news!

Well, if SyFy decides not to pick it back up again, they can always put it on Hulu like the producers of Endgame did. At least American viewers can see it then.

Personally, I'm getting tired of all the pseudoreality *beep* that SyFy's been playing. Although I kinda liked 'Who Wants To Be A Superhero?', the suits in their infinite dedication to the bottom line didn't renew it. And I'm surprised they actually paid for the last 2 seasons of BSG.

So what's that leave us? Alphas (the Heros clone. Heroes was better), the 'last season' of Eureka (I wasn't too happy with the internal 'reboot' in Season 4, but hey, that's just me), more wrestling, more 'paranormal' shows, more sci fi makeup shows (interesting from a technical standpoint, but how about a show that goes behind the scenes at a CGI shop??), and more 3-5 mil budget 'mill movies' with bad science, B-list actors, ridiculous scripts, and 3/4 the budget spent on CGI. Oh, and 'Being Human', the 'Americanised' version of the Brit show to wrangle in the 'Twilight' crowd. 'Lost Girl' already had 2 seasons in the can before SyFy bought it from Canada, so it doesn't count as a 'SyFy original series'. Merlin they got from the BBC. Now, if they'd get Primeval from ITV and maybe 'Being Erica', they might have a decent lineup again.

I was thinking that it could replace Smallville on the WB.

They should rename the channel. It barely has anything to do with science fiction these days.

reply

Agreed. It's name is as ill-fitting at MTV.

And I doubt that B&C being turned into a film rather than a series is good news for Sanctuary. IMO, it's just another example of the execs at Scyfy focusing on the bottom line and favoring reality junk that costs about $3.00 an episode to make so they can turn a profit even if only six people tune in. Instead of making more junk, I wish they would actually try to market their good scripted stuff so it could be profitable.

That's what the whole rename to Syfy was about, but apparently they wanted to maintain the image they had with science fiction without actually having to actually put out science fiction. Basically, they wanted to ride the coat tail of the name. Syfy isn't science fiction anymore, but they want people to believe so.

The only consolation is knowing that broadcast television is dying. That's why so much schedule time is aimed at morons who watch "reality" TV and stuff that takes no more than a 30 min attention span . Because they are the ones still depending on it for their entertainment. They don't know how to get it anywhere else. But this is changing rapidly. Some of the better shows are already being shopped to internet based production companies. And the pay cable companies are going to go the way of espn3 and broadcast internet channels with subscription services. Then show production will be based on what viewers actually watch rather than an antiquated ratings system and advertising dollars. I would be surprised if in 10 years internet productions haven't taken over almost completely. And 15 years after that we will be thinking of cable and satellite TV the way we think of aerial antennas and rabbit ears.

I can't think of many really viable productions that have shifted to an internet-based approach. Sanctuary started off as a series of webisodes, but it was with the intention of getting on TV. And some of the recently cut Soaps flirted with the idea of webisodes, but I don't think they were able to work out the financing (and these Soaps were considering the possibility because they'd been dumped by TV, not because it was a preferable situation).

And TV has already moved away from the fixed-programming approach because most stuff is available On Demand.

reply

So you're saying that cable and satellite TV merely represent an intermediate step in the development of electronic entertainment? Could you put that in writing? I'd love to know with certainty that things are going to get better, because they sure couldn't get any worse. :)

reply

At least in the case of Being Erica, that series finished and all the DVDs came out ages ago, so it wouldn't make sense to be a lead program.

Also, SyFy has wrestling?!?! What ON EARTH does wrestling have to do with science fiction? That just sounds ridiculous, and it that's the case, then they really should have changed their name completely instead of just changing the spelling of Sci-fi to a weird, illiterate spelling.

That's all quite puzzling! :(
