'Echo' is Petty's best album, dammit!

I hate it when it's regarded as some kind of lukewarm effort. It's his best album, IMO, but the guy who thinks highly of "Let Me Up (I've Had Enough)" dares to talk badly about it. >:-)

I agree with you, I got a little upset at that moment to. specially since the guy that said it was bad liked "Let Me Up I've Had Enough" and "the Last DJ", which I think are Petty's two worst albums. The Last DJ which the movie treats as a great album was universally bashed, "Dreamville" was the only winner on the album. I admire what Petty was trying to say with the album but the songs were so forgettable.

Huh. I had never heard of "The Last DJ" until watching this documentary, but I am listening to it right now--and through the first nine tracks, I think it's actually pretty great.

I haven't listened to "Echo", though, so I'll try that next. (Before this documentary, I only knew Petty's many, many radio songs.)

Okay, now I've listened to six songs from "Echo", and although it's good, I still think "Last DJ" is better, as are multiple other Petty/HB albums.

Nah, too spotty for my opinion. I much prefer the leaner, tighter self titles, Hard Promises and as far as his latter day work, would rate Wallflowers above it. But it's a great album nonetheless. Just could've used some trimming IMO.

I like Echo a lot. The Last DJ is the one I can do without.

Mark me down as another Echo fan. Maybe not his greatest but in the top five. In some ways it is Blood on the Tracks.

I don't think anyone was talking bad about it....just that the time surrounding it was bittersweet and painful. A album filled with a lot of pain because of Tom's divorce and the whole thing with Howie.

"Swingin'" is absolutely Petty and the Heartbreakers most underrated song.
