I liked her better than his family.

I found the part where she beats up the sister a tad unrealistic. She had all the sisters which could all jump her at the same time and she threw the first punch? Yeah right. Charlene seemed to have the same interests as his family the only difference was that she "loved him". But she kept abandoning him each time he didnt do what she wanted and then she came back because she knew he would be famous. Then the last time she left, Mickey told her off in the gym and everything he said was true, and of course she was going to come back, she wasnt going to leave him for someone else to take.

I agree, that fight scene was a little strange...At first I thought she was just defending herself by saying she would rip the girls hair out...but that was 7 to 1. And that's just counting his sisters.

Im not being critical of the real Charlene just the character in the movie.

Charlene was no diff than the family. She was basically just a cling on like the rest.

Agreed but I think it was to show that Charlene could hold her own against his sisters.

No..She walked out because HE didnt do what HE wanted...

Mickey getting bullied into a corner by his family and he couldnt get a word in.. Charlene stood up for him

A woman walks out on a man in a modern film because he doesn't do what she wanted?

I feel like I've seen that before, once or twice.

Well in the film she had good reason to. He should've stayed in the resto as many people told him to including her. She was the one that helped him realize how his family was using him.

[quote]I have to agree with you. Not really on her walking out on him so many times, but because she seemed to interfere a lot between Micky and his family. And the time that he mentioned that he wanted to train with Dicky (and that if it weren't for Dicky, he wouldn't have won his last fight) - she got pissed because he actually admitted that he needed HIS Brother and wanted him near. She even mocked his sobriety. She may've been justified in a lot of the things she said about and to them because it DID seem like they didn't really have his best interest at heart - and she did have a good influence on him and helped him to be better...but regardless, I don't think she had the right to butt in on the problems and arguments he had with his family. Like the several times, the Mother or Dicky would say something to Micky and she'd answer for him. I just felt it was disrespectful and out of place.

The more she did it in this film, the more I found myself taking Micky's mother's side when she corrected her eyes and let her know that she wasn't talking to her - she was talking to her son. Like you said, absolutely no disrespect to the real Charlene (Or even Amy Adams' brilliant acting), but the portrayal in this film made her somewhat unlikable in my opinion.

P.S. And yeah, the parts between Charlene and the sisters did seem a bit unrealistic. lol No idea why at least ONE of them didn't physically check her for the way she was disrespecting them.

reply

Agreed, and the fight scene was some nonsense that was just feel-goodism for our supposed rooting for Charlene to knock out one of the sisters.

She walked out because it was the only way for him to stop being a *beep* with his family and to do what HE wanted. She didn't give him orders and she didn't come up with anything. He was the one telling her what he wanted but he didn't have the balls to do it when his family was in the room. She saw he was caving in again, she walked.

She could see the dysfunction and codependence that was running rampant throughout the family and how destructive it was. She didn't want any part of that. It wasn't so much about having Mickey do what she wanted, but rather it was about what she was willing to have be a part of her life. Totally reasonable and healthy thing to do on her part. Nobody was putting a gun to his head.
