That just seemed extra cruel. Were they trying to ruin his career? I thought he was an admired guy in Lowell, and his trainer was a cop, so that seemed odd.
ETA: I should clarify: my question was not coming from a naïve place of "Why would police, who are there to protect and serve, do something that is bad? I thought they were the good guys...yadda yadda yadda". I know that a lot of cops, maybe even the majority of them, are scumbags.
But they are, like most scummy people, nice to the people whom they see as their friends and allies. And in a smaller city like that, they have to live among the people and have friends and family who are interwoven into the community. So a white guy who is known as "the pride of Lowell" and who provides an extra job for one of their own as a trainer, would be someone who you think would get preferential positive treatment, if anything.
Right, it sure seemed like that. But they never gave us any indication that the cops or any other group in Lowell had anything against him, so it was strange and out of left field, never followed up on.
I would like someone to confirm that scene did not happen to the real Micky Ward and was pure Hollywood fabrication (like the whole portrayl of Alice and the sisters, which was pure fiction)
They dragged me, and got me on the ground. One cop was yelling, 'Break his ... hands! Break his ... hands! I don't know who it was who said it. I was cuffed at the time. They split my head wide open. I got seven stitches in my head, and I got my hands busted up.
Micky reported that his hand was actually injured not in boxing, but by policemen in the city of Lowell. Micky stated that while removing policeman from his brother Dicky during a mini-brawl outside the Cosmo club that his hands were cuffed behind his back and then hit repeatedly with a flashlight
Cops can be pretty cruel. They let their violent passions get the better of them instead of really protecting or helping people. Mickey was just trying to stop them from beating his brother too hard and they could have just restrained him with all those extra hands, but no, that looked like they really wanted to hurt him so badly he'd be scarred for life for no good reason. They're the wrong guys to expect to be better than the guys they arrest, rough up, or kill.
It's not "violent passions". It's called being power hungry. Some of them think they are untouchable and are arrogant douche bags. The only way they can express that is through force, physically or verbally. It also doesn't help that lots of cops are not very educated. Put power in the hands of an uneducated person and they tend to run amok.
Very easy to believe they would do this, especially when there are multiple cops on the scene to validate each others BS stories. Police have lots of time after an arrest to discuss their side of the story, and a judge will always take their side. In most cases, arrested people cannot afford a good attorney so that is another advantage to the cops. Oh, and cops get paid to show up at court so good luck hoping they won't show. It's an uphill battle once those cuffs are on you.

They do know hes a boxer, one says "hes a fighter break his hand", also some mahy not have liked him for maybe losing them money on a fight, hated his mad brother, were jealous etc

I figured the cops broke his hand because they knew he was a boxer and therefore would be very dangerous to fight and take down. Micky's hands were like weapons since he knew how to use them to a devastating degree, so breaking one would be like disarming a criminal holding a gun. Just look at earlier in the scene where Dickie takes down the bouncer twice his size with one gut punch.
You can hear a cop say "he's a fighter, break his hand", or something like that. I'm not saying it was right, in fact it was quite effed up, but it does make sense on the cops part to do that.
