strange subject for a PhD. Day before my birthday, no less.
Several films by Japanese director Miike come to mind: Ichin The Killer(extrmely violent Yakuza), Visitor Q(extreme reality show which I avoided for years), Dead or Alive I(more Yakuza) and Gozu(still more Yakuza) and Imprint (which he made for Showtime which refused to run it.) Miike is hard to pigeonhole and his films can wallow in torture, excrement, perversion. He can be lyrical and funny, i.e. The Happiness of The Khakaturis which is not all that violent but is a family movie musicals with zombies. Or he do a Japanese version of a spaghetti western Teriyaki Western Django with a guest appearance by Quentin Tarantino.
Any of the Italian zombie/cannibal movies of the 60's and 70's in the wake of George Romero's films. Dawn of The Dead and Day of The Dead by Romero certainly.
Hong Kong cinema has its Category III films, but HK also went back to the government which might mean censorship. Two Anthony Wong films come immediately to mind. Wong is a Eurasian star and there are probably other films of his worth looking into.
The Untold Story for which he won a Best Actor award as a demented restauranteur famous for his roast pork buns. When I wrote my first screenplay I included a reference to this movie which is based on a true story. There are two sequels which I have no seen.
The Ebola Syndrome in which Wong is infected with the Ebola virus and proceeds to spread it.
Glad to be of help. Paul Woodall
