So is Amy going to destroy the world?

I understand that she didn't have the vine slinking around under her skin but she still could have been carrying spores or something.

The Mayans seemed to think that once you just touched the vine you were infected and who would know better than they? The leader shot the little kid just because the vine touched him.

So did Amy escape only to infect the rest of the planet with the vine?

yes, this is a possible outcome

and even if the mexicans catch her eventually, the other tourists arrived at the place and no one was there to stop them.

we are screwed

Depends on which cut you view...

...but she still could have been carrying spores or something.

Yes. Even in the theatrical version--with its more upbeat ending--it's likely.

This bears out the grimmer conclusion of the Unrated cut. I'm still not sure which ending I favor. The Unrated feels justified by The Mayans'--who know this voracious plant very well--never giving an inch on how they dealt with exposure to the vine, yet the somewhat optimistic catharsis of the theatrical ending was somehow more satisfying to me.

So did Amy escape only to infect the rest of the planet with the vine?

Could be.

So Amy gave "birth" to the Triffids."The Day of the Triffids" makes sense for me now.

She was carrying spores, even if she were not infected. Remember Eric told Stacy they were growing on them. That is why when Amy touched the plant in the beginning they became hostile. She would have had spores on her shoes, pants and skin. No one could see them yet; however, they were there and ready to spread. That is why they couldnt let them leave. Then the Greek goes and steps into it and all hell broke loose.

Cue Paul Simon: "She's got spores on the soles of her shoes..."

You can go to robertmunns.com and look at the "RUINS" page, or go directly there from http://www.fsheff.pages.qpg.com/rmunns/id18.html

There you will find some images by an on-set photographer, and some screen shots showing Amy's headstone and a familiar-looking vine growing out of her grave.

Bob Munns played the groundskeeper, and said they practically wore him out with take after take where he had to kneel and stand and kneel and stand... But it was worth it at the time. Trouble is, his scenes were not in the general release. I think I might have the one that includes them, or perhaps it's in Bob's demo reel.
