Let me get this straight (cutting scene) (spoilers)

A crazy bitch is cutting herself all over with a hunting knife. One guy walks up behind her, touches her, and tells her to give him the knife. She freaks out and slashes him. So what does the second guy do five seconds later? ................ THE EXACT SAME THING!!!

Yeah because every American is trained in weapon defense.

I think that since that was his own girlfriend doing the cutting, he figured she'd listen to him. Something like "well, she didn't listen to my friend but she'll listen to me," so he gave it a go.

At the very least, he could have walked around and approached her from the front, so he could see the knife at all times. You wouldn't need specialized training to think of that, just a sense of self-preservation.
