Felt sorry for German tourist Mathias

I felt particularly sorry for the gruesome fate of German tourist, Mathias at the movie's early part.
At the movie's beginning, I first thought, "Oh no, here's Hollywood's stereotype of the sinister European with the accented English, luring some gullibe, thrill-seeking American kids to their doom". But it didn't turn out that way. Mathias was a normal, good guy and I always felt he didn't deserve the fate in the movie. It was kudos that an Englishman actor actually did a great job portraying a German tourist character. He came across 100% authentic.
