Ignorance of Americans about Middle East

I just wonder about how ignorant people still are when even after watching the movie reviewers in imdb are still referring to Egypt, Afghanistan, Morocco and Pakistan as part of middle east.
Egypt and Morocco are in another continent (Africa) while Pakistan and Afghanistan are closer to India than they are to arab countries.
And yet these people act as if they are enlightened.

Funny how you can make such a large scale stereotypical assumption about an entire group of diverse people based on just what a few have said. That's the real idiocy.

"And yet these people act as if they are enlightened."

You are no genius.

Close your mouth lest you betray your gross stupidity again.

reply

I never mentioned anything about being a genius...wonder who's making an assumption now.

Well guess i made a mistake when i said Americans. I didnt mean to insult anyone's intelligence as I know few americans who are not ignorant on such matters.

But still you see many americans make such mistakes more often than other nationalities. And the irony is that they believe they are "enlightened" by such mistakes.

reply

Well, the way that you assert your OPINION as if its complete untestable truth, it seems you logically must be a genius (a recurring problem of IMDB posters). However, I have enough schooling to know a *beep* when I see one, you probably have no college degree, and the fact of the matter is that the "Americans" you come into contact with are probably the most malicious and virile internet flamers that are indicative to every other country. I would include you in that category. Every country has their flamers, USA is and has always been in the spotlight so its pointed out more. What am I trying to say? Ignorance is everywhere, so before you specifically attack a country for that maybe do that for your own???

reply

i live in america. americans are a very ignorant people when it comes to the middle east.

the irony is that your post just exemplifies the stereotype of an american. angry and ignorant. way to go. you have personally lowered the bar.

"in this world there's two kinds of people ... those with loaded guns, and those who dig."

reply

I am not american (hell no). And I have a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and currently pursuing an MBA.

Plus when i say that some people act enlightened by mistakes, I have seen such people. I have already posted at the beginning of one such mistake and it is these mistakes that americans believe in that have caused them to misunderstand arabs and islam.

reply

Bachelors in electrical engineering? I mean heck, I'm sure you're a great engineer, but it don't make you no sociologist.

Morocco and Egypt are technically part of the Middle East, as are Georgia and Armenia. It's just a region of the world, the people there are completely different. I have just about nothing in common with the average Mexican, but we're both Americans. Not to mention the Inuit tribes of North America. I don't get what the argument is here?

Oh yeah, it's turned into "America vs. the World"

reply

I didnt say i was a sociologist. I just stated it because a few people assumed that i was illiterate just because my views didnt agree with theirs.

"Technically"?? Again the ignorance steps in. Just because both countries speak Arabic doesn't make them middle-eastern. You can say that about Tunisia, Sudan and Algeria. They speak arabic too. But you wont count them as middle eastern.
And if you look at customs and traditions, even the middle-eastern countries have different cultures and traditions from each other. So technically Morocco and Egypt is african.

Georgia and Armenia?? O_o

"America vs world"? That's sad especially since that's what america's foreign policy was mainly about.

reply

I think a better question to you, dude, is how do you have the time to keep responding to all these posts on an imdb message board if you're pursuing an MBA?

reply

by the way...

And the irony is that they believe they are "enlightened" by such mistakes.

^^^^what the *beep* are you even talking about???

reply

the truth is that most of the americans are ignorant, stupid, uneducated and fat.. not all.. but yeah most... and if you are an american and you tell me that this is not true.. than we can all see how ignorant you are.. just remember .. i didn't said all.. but acording to sutveys.. yeah... america is full of stupid fat *beep* no offence.. i know the truth hurts.. that why nobody should be nationalist... so they can see the truth about the country they live in...

reply

Actually, you're the ignorant and uneducated one in this case. You see, "Middle East" oder "Near East" isn't really a straight-forward geographical term, but more of an unclear, historical definition of a certain area. And this area includes, at least as the "Greater Middle East" defined by the G8, indeed Northern Africa and also Pakistan is often associated with the whole thing.

Hence, even if I have to admit that this notion may be quite stupid (basically like the "Western World" or other crudely generalizing words), it isn't wrong to use it that way and neither is it a sign for ignorance, especially not for specific US ignorance. But it's probably easier to nourish the own prejudice and short-sighted thinking than to check the facts, hu?

reply

Possibly the most intelligent post I've seen. The middle east does inclide northern Africa. So YES, Egypt is part of the middle east. I'm not really sure why the "electrical engineer" thought someone was ignorant for understanding this concept.

reply

Well if you got by continents then its Asia.Middle East comes more from Persian and Ottoman empire and the cultural and religious bs they share.Back when Ottoman was forcing that ridiculous religion down people's throats.

Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by rulers as useful.

reply

From an Italian called Amerigo Vespucci the name "America" born out to the whole "American" continent which is divided in North America, Central America and South America.

This means that all people living in this Continent are "Americans" like all living in Europe are "Europeans".

This is to point out that to me (I'm Italian) it is really funny when someone generalize the term "Americans".

People living in the USA are certainly Americans but not the only Americans.

The question is: what "Americans" are ignorant about Middle East?

May be Brazilians? Or Mexicans? Or Canadians?

Please when make statement like the one in the subject try to be more precise or you can raise confusion in the readers.

My 5 cents.

" Turkey, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Yemen, Palestine, Iraq, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Cyprus, Iran, and Egypt "

These are the Middle East Countries.

The middle east is like pornography. I can't define it but I know it when I see it.
