He turned back while still in Afghanistan, at the Pakistani boarder ... in the mountains where many people believe Osama was "hiding in caves."

The people he met in Pakistan all told him bin Laden was in the region of Waziristan- he was not. Waziristan is along the Afghan boarder and Abbottabad is closer to India than it is to Afghanistan. So, Spurlock really wasn't close at all.

shareYeah at one point he was physically close to him, but he didn't know or think that at the time. He wandered around a lot in the middle east so at one point or another he would have been close, no matter where bin Laden was hiding.

But he had no idea, really. That was part of the point of the movie. Nobody had any idea or at least that's what they claimed. By "close" I thought the OP meant in distance, what was the closest he got physically.
Pakistan is not in the middle east...
