Seems the vast number of people that dislike this are Rocky Horror fans

Just something that I noticed in the message boards and in the introduction of this film to other people.

Those that are Rocky Horror fans tend to have a special level of disdain for this movie.

Personally although I own Rocky Horror and have been to several midnight showings I fail to see the lure of this movie. I respect it for its secured status as a cult classic, and its loyal following but that is about it.

I find the songs in Rocky to be rather bland, and the acting to be so over the top its comical (yes I know that is kinda the point).

Also I think it is fair to note that I typically do not really enjoy musicals, the Buffy Musical Episode being the only real exception.

Now on to Repo.

I think there are several things to take into account here. This really isn't a musical and follows the more Operatic themes. Where in a musical its really just people breaking into song to further the story.. Operas use the songs to tell the story. So if you are a fan of musicals this may not be for you.

Also something to take into account is individual taste in music. If you are into pop music, RnB, or Showtunes this probably isn't the movie for you. If you are a fan of Marylin Manson, Sixx A.M. and the likes this is probably something you will enjoy.

Over all I loved Repo and I honestly watch it about once a month. I own the CD and it sits in my CD Wallet in my car and is listened to regularly.

I love both. But I'm also a fan of both Star Wars AND Star Trek, so...sue me for not taking sides.

All the songs in Rocky Horror are awesome. Only a few of the songs in Repo are. But Repo does have music and singing the WHOLE way through. Which I think is a bonus. And visually I think Repo is much cooler.

But really, I guess I just like musicals. If there's good music I don't really care about much else.

I'm a fan of both. I only saw both recently, so I probably don't have the same history with Rocky Horror as others do.

(And Star Trek and Star Gate. 'Wars' never connected fully for me, but has its place of importance)

Ditto...I'm a rocky horror fan and I enjoyed Repo too. So I guess it's different strokes for different folks.

The plot of this film was kind of interesting.
However, the awkward/stilted/forced-sounding music and lyrics completely ruined any chance this thing had of being entertaining in any way.

What? I loved the music X.x;; Zydrate anatomy and chase the morning especially. The only thing I don't like is the stereotypical sad ending (granted Shilo is alive at the end...but her dad and blind Mag aren't *sniff sniff* )

There are some genuinely good songs on the soundtrack, but a great deal of it is crap too. "Seventeen" may actually be the worst musical number ever.

And the ending was not stereotypical. That's just absurd. This movie may have had problems, but the ending wasn't one of them.

its not a musical. its really an opera. the "awkward/stitled/forced" sounding music is part of the style of operas.

i agree with OP about the fact that some people go into this movie with the wrong expectations. people are expecting a typical musical. operas are pretty rare in our culture. i love this movie and the style. operas are great. every little line (almost) was part of a short musical phrase even if it wasnt part of a song. there were lots of sustained loud notes. there were lots of places where the characters were all singing different things over one an other, like talking over one another. operas are all about emotion and layer. singing basic thoughts and actions is a way to convey that. a big part of an opera is stating the obvious for dramatic and emotional effect too. i hated Rocky Horror Picture Show (thought it did have one or two good songs).

now the movie wasnt perfect. there were some plays with bad editing/mixing. but all in all enjoyable.

This cant be an opera. I liked this and you would need to hold me at a unpoint to like an opera.

LOL i'm sick of people thinking all movies with Goth characters are POSER movies. What and Rocky Horror Picture Show clothes was never sold at Hot Topic? In fact I see some of them once in a while too. SO YOU ARE WRONG.

Yeah ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW also had CLOTHES SELL IN HOT TOPIC. what a poser movie that is.

I know several people who love both, and a few of them put on a Rocky Horror live show monthly with a local group. However, when they tried to get their group to do a Repo! night, they were shot down pretty viciously from what I understand, by other members of the group. (Although a lot of the people in the group are complete and utter nasty jerks, so it doesn't surprise me.)

I think some Rocky Horror fans are a little over-territorial about these types of films.

I personally hated Rocky Horror. It was one of the most overrated film experiences I've ever witnessed. (Although I won't say it was terrible, I just personally hated it and felt betrayed) Although the hype machine might have been to blame, as it had been built up to me for years and years. That and the fact that 99% of the cast at the show I went to and just as many of the audience were stoners, which is a group I've lost respect for over time. I know there are plenty of nice, non-judgemental stoners, but I've just spent so many years around dozens and dozens of the nasty, holier-than-thou ones who stand for all of the negative stereotypes and relish in hypocrisy- the types who literally worship pot and use it as a way to cope with otherwise crappy lives, and will chew you out and swear at you and slander you if you even dare to say you don't personally like MJ, and it kind of poisoned me against the whole lot.
