Heineken

Why the hell are they drinking (and branding) Heineken?? It's the most popular bad beer in the world.

reply

My only guess is that it is hugely popular in Asia.

This was in the trivia section dude:-

" The beer most often seen on the Lagoon (the PT boat) and elsewhere is 'Heireken', a clear spoof of Heineken."

reply

Heineken is best. Hands down. End of story.

I'd take a Ying over a Heiny any day ;)

It's possible the Heineken is really a good beer, we just get a pissy version imported because America has a reputation for liking pissy beer, and so they sell us piss.

Personally I think it's a joke on us, even moreso for the pompous pricks who pay premium prices to drink that.

reply

Heineken is awesome. 5%, freshest taste. It's goooood stuff.

reply

well to respond to enkephalin07, technically speaking the 3/4 of the Lagoon Company are American. Dutch is an old Vietnam veteran, Benny is from Florida, and Revy is a Chinese-American from New York. So agreeing that Americans like pissy beer, they are American after all

reply

"Dutch is an old Vietnam veteran." This makes me wonder what year the events in Black Lagoon happen. The last American combat troops left South Vietnam in 1973, meaning Dutch would be nearly 60 if he was in his 20's in 1973. Something else I don't get is the story about Hansel and Gretel being victims of Nicolae Ceausescu's dictatorship in Romania, that dictator was overthrown and killed in 1989.

Dutch looks like he's in his 30's possibly 40's and the series is based in the early 90's, so somewhere that all adds up. It's been hinted at in the manga that he lied about his tour of Vietnam but it's just a hint. All in all it really doesn't matter, does it?

reply

the series can't be placed in the early 90s, there is a scene that shows the origins of Balalaika, and part of the scene place her as a woman standing in absolute poverty while watching on television the Barcelona Olympics 1992 while she laments the end of the Soviet Union.

They changed the name of the Heineken beer, but they kept the name of Bacardi Rum, although by camera angle, the famous bat logo is not shown.

Other brands of liquors and bottle designs are visible and are mentioned by the characters in their lines

killersnakes is the most right.

Having spent much time in Thailand, Heineken is the go-to import beer over there. I remember drinking many towers with my friends at the local mall's beer garden. However, I like the local beers like Sing-ha, Chang, and Leo.

I actually like the fact they have Heinie, it shows that the creators of the manga/anime actually did some research or knew this beforehand.

reply

It's the same in Malaysia. Allthough they have more imports but Heineken is the most famous one. I don't understand it though. Heineken is too light. It tastes watered out. Reminds me of that horrible Budweiser they serve in the US even though that one is even worse.

reply

Heineken is pretty great IMO but yeah here in America there is a movement to switch to micro brews. I live in Colorado, one of the more famous states for its breweries, and I've seen more and more people making the switch (it's all I'll drink unless I'm in a dive bar or wanting to drink cheap).
