looking for (violent) anime that more 'western style'

hi,
i must first explain that although i like animation films for adults and absolutely loved black lagoon (which to this day is the only anime series i every watched and loved) and i liked blood: the last vampire and monster (which i am currently half way through), i have some issues with anime in general.

there always seems to be some pseudo-philosophical aspect and monologue that bothers me. i'm not sure if you know what i mean. sometimes characters ponder the meaning of life in an ongoing inner monologue, which is usually the point where i zone out completely. this element is of course also present in black lagoon, but still it paces like a western made action flick, which is very engaging.

i am looking for exactly THAT. i know that that is just the way japanese mangas and anime are told, but maybe there are a few out there that are not so big on the philosophy and just try to tell a story in pictures instead of all the talking.

are there any anime out there like that? a friend of mine is very much into anime but aside from monster hasn't been able to recommend anything to me, that would apply to my very complicated preferences.

here's what i loved about BL:
- the heroine is beautiful, yet strong and edgy and also very violent
- the action is nothing for children, very intense and well paced
- the setting and plot are very believable. crime syndicates, mob bosses, mercenaries, corrupt police, smuggling and shooting. FIN! nothing supernatural.

I MUST ADMIT THAT i don't know many animes and that i can't be bothered to buy 100-issue manga series. i just want good animated action movies, maybe thrillers as an alternative to live action movies. i like the style of anime films and series but that strangeness in most of them turns me off. especially when it gets supernatural. i have no problem with deep and meaningful stories, it's just the way it is usually brought across.

can you help me out? i would very much appreciate it. :)

First watch cowboy bebop and then samurai champloo. Both are similar in style to black lagoon and imo even better.

I agree with the poster above me and will add Afro Samurai and Hellsing Ultimate.

I also agree with these reccomendations. You should also look into Trigun, Ghost in the Shell, and Gundam. There might be some philosophical stuff here and there, but they're good. Trigun is like a western, Ghost in the Shell is a crime series type thing (they're looking for a cyber terrorist) and Gundam is a big war going on in space.

Also, avoid Evangelion like the plague. It's personally my favorite anime, but it's also the poster boy for anime full of philosophical stuff. There are entire episodes dedicated to it, and the last two episodes completely abandon the plot and just focus on the characters and their mental issues/purpose in life.

Edit: you might also look into Akira. It gets a bit philosophical and supernatural, but it's fantastic, and one of the defining cyberpunk anime. Might not be your cup of tea, but since it's a movie, it's definitely worth at least one watch.

Also if you like a good western read the manhwa Priest. It's a korean comic and it is awesome. Also it has nothing to do with the awful movie.

Trigun is one of my favorites and has some pretty awesome characters. It fits the western thing more than most anime

I just started watching the first episode and I have to say that I am a new fan to this anime and I glad I bought the complete series on Blu-ray DVD combo!!!!!

Burst Angel.

El Cazador de la Bruja.

Madlax.

Noir. (The last three are all made by the same people, and they are all awesome, and feature no nonsense femme fatales.)

However of all the ones I mentioned, 'Western' type? Best luck is Burst Angel and El Cazador de la Bruja.

BACCANO! Crazy violent, not a whole lot of philosophy discussed, and really unique characters. Just so well done overall
