Best argument for Dubs since Cowboy Bebop

I had already watched the dubbed version and loved it. So my friend got me the subtitled version and said it was funnier. So I thought I'd give it a look.

I was bored to tears. The voices were so flat and monotone I think I actually fell asleep. I actually didn't really like Rock dubbed but after hearing him subbed I take back all my criticism. He not only sounds dull but he also sounds like most young male Japanese characters. And don't even get me started on Revy's Japanese voice.

Eventually I got used to the new voices, but a lot of my favorite lines were changed for the worst.

For example:

English version:

Revy: You're lucky I was around to save you from having you're F#@king balls shot off at Hotel Moscow! Remember that?
Eda: Last time I checked I didn't have a set but maybe you do you nasty She-Male!

Japanese Version:
Revy: Who was around to save you from having you're balls shot off at Hotel Moscow!
Eda: I haven't had balls since I was born! Monkey Faced Dumba$$!

I was at this point I shut off the series. Come on! Monkey faced dumba$$? Thats not nearly as funny as the she-male line. Not helping was the fact that I had to hear all that with little to no passion in their yelling (at least I think they are yelling.) I am not anti Sub, but I hate sub purists who insist that the sub versions are better just because they are in the original language. I might go back and watch the rest eventually, but so far I have not seen evidence of my friend's claim that the Sub is funnier.

Yep the dub is awesome. I love the grit and variety of emotions the English dub artists provided plus most of the characters work better speaking in English. There is just something about how the voice actors swear that sounds so hilarious and right.

I thought they sounded fantastic in both languages. I had no problem with Rock or Revy in Japanese. Revy's supposed to sound slightly monotone and smoky when not expressing irritation. It fits her personality. As for Rock, he sounds more professional and mature in the sub, while in the dub, he gives more emotion (and Light Yagami). Both versions give excellent performances. Honestly, I think you're just biased because you watched the dub first. I know, for me, the version I watch first can effect my preference.

Says who? If they were going for a monotone detached killer then they failed miserably. It's incredibly jarring to here a monotone voice come out when Revy is clearly screaming at the top of her lungs. She is animated like an active passionate individual. Rock's performance Subbed wouldn't be so bad but I don't like to get reminded of Clannad when watching Black Lagoon.

Well I've watched Girls Und Panzers subbed first and then dub and ended up preferring the dubbed version no question.

Revy spends far more time having dead eyes and snarking than she does gleefully grinning and screaming. Just because the dub chose to make her sound louder doesn't make the original voice actress wrong for going with smoky and low key. Revy's a heavy smoker by the way.

1. Snarking is not monotone.
2. That still doesn't make it any less jarring when she still goes low key and smoky when she is unambiguously screaming and being active.

I suppose not, but I find Revy's Dub voice more entertaining. Her performance makes the series for me.

I like the dub because Dutch Benny and Revy are from america and speak English which is why in the sub Revy sometimes speaks English since she grew up in New York

I've heard some horrible dubs (go back to the early 90's *shudder*), and usually I find the subs superior. But as you say, this Bebop (and I add GotS) were the 3 at the head of the list where I prefer dubs. Especially since Revy's vulgerness comes out so much better. ^_^

I think the American producers just like to juice up the dialogue and vibe for the new audience. Ever compare the sub and dub of High School of the Dead? You'll see what I mean. Also, cultural considerations too: I'd bet "monkey-faced" has more meaning in the original but sounds kind of goofy in English.

The dub is great and some of the lines sound better,but the sub is fine to watch too.

Cowboy Bebop is great,but thats not the only anime I would bring up when it comes to dubs,Yu Yu Hakusho has a great dub and there are many other great dubs
