*SPOILER* what did the scene mean when...

...Horten had been warned, at the pub, that terrible weather was coming. He held onto a streetpost with both hands, and watched objects and people slip by on the icy road. A man walked past, and mentioned that his wife was expecting him to bring a salmon home; he then casually asked Horten if he liked some kind of butter sauce.

What was this included for? Was the man indirectly inviting Horten for dinner with his family, an adventure and unknown experience that Horten passed on? Did he know Horten? He walked up the hill, just going about the business of bringing home a fish for dinner, and did not slip or struggle. Meanwhile, Horten was too petrified to move. That is about all I got, but if anyone understands this scene or has a thought to share, I would enjoy reading it. Cheers.

I have no idea, but I also wondered in that scene about the man sliding down the hill on his butt, sitting upright, holding his briefcase ... That seemed dream-like, not real. What did people make of that?

I just finished watching the movie, and I agree the scene in the bathroom and the scene thereafter with Odd hugging the street pole were incredibly ambiguous (I even wanted to know if Sandford Butter is a real place). Other than that, I can't help you out.

Sandefjord butter is a butter sauce with parsley and lemon, used with cod and other fish. Anyway, I didn't get that scene at all either, but I thought it was very pretty! I felt like it represented a turning point after which more absurd thing started to happen (really all the while since the weather forecaster talked to him about the weather by the urinal).

I think it was a small window into Horten's - at least occasional - indecision and/or inability to act. Recall the scene with Trygve when he talks about how his mother and most of his friends ski jumped, but he was always afraid. I think the two guys going downhill was mostly for laughs. Also, everyone else in the scene, whether sliding downhill or heading uphill, were going about their business as best they could - Horten was frozen in place.

The man with the fish, btw, obviously was wearing metal ice cleats - you could hear them on the ice. Also, he was listed in the credits as "Regular patron at Valkyrien", so he and Horten probably know each other a little from there.
